Fred again is an artist who experiments a lot within his music. His music is heavily based around creativity and freedom, and he makes music on his laptop, using Logic Pro, wherever he wants, and likes to make music based off of the environment he is surrounded by. He has learnt stuff like this from Brian Eno, who is his mentor. He samples a lot within his music, whether it's a song he's heard, a voicenote he received from someone, or even the wind in a random video he has taken, you'll find the use of samples within the majority of his music. Fred prefers to use a laptop with logic from his own house instead of going into studios, but he always takes his laptop with him if he needs to go into studio sessions. He also taes it with him to his live shows. At 16, Fred again started to work on projects with Brian Eno, who was the neighbour of Fred's friend, which is where he started to learn most of his experimental skills within his music. Fred was able to see the way Brian Eno experiments with sound with his own eyes, which made him see music in a completely different way. One standout experiment Brian Eno showed to Fred was using a massage ball on a guitar to create a unique sound. Seeing all of what Brian Eno was doing made Fred want to break the traditional "rules" within music. Brian encouraged Fred to make music mainly based on the sound of it and not the theory side of it, you can clearly hear this influence in a lot of Fred again's songs. Within his music, Fred uses a lot of Logic's stock plugins, and example of this is his use of the ES2 synth to create most of his bass sounds, where he uses a sine wave with some overdrive, and then uses an EQ to cut out the unwanted frequencies.
Some of Fred's ideas around music have inspired me in some areas of my compositions as well. I like to have creativity and freedom within my tracks, and I also like to sample in my music as well. However, It is still important to have my own sound within my music as well, as it could end up feeling like I'm just copying his and others sounds as well. Having my own unique sound can help me have my own ideas too, instead of just being inspired by someone and getting stuck on a composition because it may not sound correct to me.
Mk.gee
Mk.gee is a multi-instrumentalist singer, songwriter and producer. He is specifically very good at the guitar. He has a very interesting guitar tone which is changing the way new musicians see the guitar. He achieves this tone by playing with a 60s Fender American Jaguar, which he has modified and put baritone strings on. He also uses 2 signals, his first signal goes into a Tascam 424 MK1 which is an analog 4 track cassette recorder, and his second signal goes into a Roland GK-3 which gives the guitar a bit of a synth underlayer, this then goes through a Roland VG-8 which is a guitar processor. https://www.reddit.com/r/Mkgee/comments/1afqcjg/theory_on_mikes_guitar_tone/?rdt=39406
He also has some FX pedals that he uses, he has a flanger, delay, reverb, and a distorted reverb pedal which adds a nice crunch to his sound when it is needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20YmcA-mf6U he goes into depth about his process in this on stage interview while he was on tour with Dijon.
Mk.gee has managed to combine a lot of different genres into one to create his own unique sound, these include lo-fi, indie, rock, alternative, experimental indie, R&B, and soft-psychedilia. Here are some of his songs here, I will also be putting the live performances of the songs in too:
