Harmony
Harmony is the way that different musical elements interact with each other in a piece, this can involve creating tension with different types of chords such as dissonant or consonant, or using something such as pads to create a rising harmony.
When the initial explosion occurs there is a sudden silence, to show how no sound can travel through the vacuum of space. There is then a pad used to show the 2 astronauts realisation that their friend has unfortunately died, this is then built up a bit when the engine of the spaceship is turned on as they go and attempt to fuel up as they don't have enough fuel to reach the planet they need to get to to relocate humanity. As they get closer to the docking station the timbre of the music increases, leaving the viewers of the movie to wonder whether the astronauts will make it or not. As they begin ascending towards the fuelling dock the timbre is increased again as the 2 astronauts try and combat the g-force from the ship spinning around. Once they attack to the dock the music stops.
Leitmotif
A leitmotif is a short piece of music that is recogniseable which creates an atmosphere for a scene, place, weather, person, or object, or idea. Leitmotifs can be found anywhere in music but most notably in film scores to add that much needed tension some films require.
There is a leitmotif at the beginning of the clip which gives the sense that something bad will happen, this plays until the astronaut is struck by an object and unfortunately killed. The silence after this occurs could also be interpreted as a leitmotif as it shows us how sound cannot travel through space. This creates this added tension as there is this sudden silence until the camera switches to the 2 other astonauts where they are seen talking in shock, making us viewers hear the exact same as what the other 2 astronauts can hear as well.
Ostinato
An ostinato is a rhythm or melody that repeats troughout a piece of music, mainly used in film scores. These are commonly played by orchestral instruments like violins.
I couldn't find any use of ostinato in this clip, but there are other film clips where it is used. But an example of one is the beginning of the Imperial March from Star Wars, this is a repeated melody and the use of this tells the viewer that Darth Vader is coming.
Drones
Drones are long sustained notes created by singular notes or chords. They are carried on for a long time and have little to no change which creates an atmospheric and ambient effect.
A drone appears when the 2 astronauts realise that their friend has been involved in an explosion. This adds the the tension and the sudden realisation that he is probably dead. These then carry on in the background as all the other instruments come in as they approach the docking station.
Instrumentation
Instrumentation is the combiation of instuments used to create an emotion in a musical piece.
At the start of the clip there are some instruments playing but it suddenly cuts to silence as the astronaut is struck and killed by an object following an explosion. This silence shows how no sound can travel through space as it is a vacuum. At 25 seconds there are pads that come in to act as drones to make the audience feel the tension during the scene as the astronauts realise their friend has died. At 1 minute and 3 seconds violins, cellos, violas, and other orchestra strings come in as the astronauts begin their journey towards the docking station. At 2 minutes 18 an instrument comes in which sounds like an organ as their ship begins flying upwards towards the docking station. The instruments then continue to get louder as the astronauts try to compete against the g-force as they ascend towards the docking station.
Sync points
Sync points are important moments from the film that the composer has wanted to combine with music in order to create an emotion or suspension.
The composer used drones to capture the astronauts reaction, these came in a couple seconds after they realised that their friend has unfortunately passed away. Orchestral instruments come in as the astronauts begin their journey towards the docking station to show how intense this mission is. As they approach the station and then begin ascending towards it the orchestral instruments get louder and louder to build up the suspension in the scene leaving the viewer to wonder if they will successfully attach to the docking station. When they eventually do the music stops.
