This is a pretty entertaining documentary that's pretty shallow in some regions. I'm a huge Beach Boys fan, so I was weary about this documentary. A lot of the band's history doesn't really get covered, so I was sure they would skip over a lot of their later years... they did mostly, but they touched on more than I thought. The early years to Pet Sounds were really concise and well-told. They used great videos, interviews, and graphics to tell the story. After Pet Sounds, they sort of scrambled through a lot of topics to try to get to the end. They briefly mentioned the albums from SMiLE to Holland (completely skipping Carl and Passion's So Tough). This skips over Beach Boys Love You (Brian's coke-filled brainchild), Eugene Landy (Brian's abusive psychologist), The Death of Dennis and Carl, the addition of John Stamos, Kokomo, Summer in Paradise (Mike Love's brainchild that only sold 1,000 copies), and the 2012 reunion. Speaking of Mike Love, he was the main member who told the story of the Beach Boys due to Brian Wilson struggling with dementia. Mike Love definitely sways to story by having him as the hero and leaves out all of the bad things that he did. He claims to have been writing all the songs with Brian, but he later says in the documentary that while he was touring with the band, Brian was back at home writing the songs. SO WHICH IS IT MIKE? This was surprisingly sanitized in some places, like Murry Wilson. Murry was their father, and extremely abusive, but they treated it like he was grumpy rather than an abusive man. They discussed the Manson murders, but not their father (an important part of their lives). I feel like there are better ways to learn about one of the greatest bands, but this is a pretty good introduction.
