This is what happens when you don't trust the source material. Anything Goes is one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time due in part to Cole Porter's genius score. This film takes only four songs from the original productions, those being Anything Goes, You're The Top, I Get A Kick Out Of You, and There Will Always Be A Lady. I love these songs, so I was so excited to see them only to see that they all have been neutered. Let's take the title song, "Anything Goes". The film opens with Ethel Merman belting the first verse out, which was a great start. I was so excited this song was performed in full in the film, only to find THEY NEVER SING THE WHOLE SONG. In the movie "Anything Goes" they only sing 15 seconds of the song. They didn't have room for it, but they had room for songs written for the movie, which aren't nearly as brilliant. Especially in the finale, where Ethel Merman and Bing Crosby make their best Chinese impression... yikes. They change all the lyrics to "You're The Top" for reasons I really don't get. It's not like the original lyrics were so offensive that the general public couldn't get it, so I really don't know why they changed it. The number is the best part of the film though, because it shows the great performance between Bing Crosby and Ethel Merman. They really have fun with the number. The humor in the film is alright, although it feels like a lot was taken from the Marx Brother's "Monkey Business". This had the makings of a great musical, but they second-guessed themselves and really made "a worthless check, a total wreck, a flop".
