5/3/25 "Ziegfeld Follies" 1945
6/10 Stars, Favorite Quote: "I can dream, can't I?" Do they say the title of the movie within the movie: Yes
This was quite the odd duck of a movie. This was an attempt to bring back the Ziegfeld Follies with the stars of MGM. The film opens with William Powell, reprising his role as Ziegfeld, in heaven talking about how much he misses his Follies. They had this stop-motion introduction, which was cool, until they whipped out the Eddie Cantor doll in full blackface. Then, after the opening, the film follows various segments with various acts. There's singing, dancing, short sketches, swimming, etc. With all these various acts, the quality of each varies. I really enjoyed most of the sketches, for instance, the ones with Keenan Wynn, Victor Moore, and Fanny Brice were all really funny, but then Red Skelton had to ruin it doing his over-the-top schtick. The dance numbers were alright, but they got a little forgettable as the film went on (except for the yellowface number with Fred Astaire, which didn't age well). The pinnacle of this movie, though, was the on-screen duo of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. It really is a shame the two never starred in any more films together, they really have great chemistry. As a whole, this can be really fun or a disjointed mess, depending on how good the current act is.
