1/18/22 "Eyes Without a Face" 1960

This was one of the front runners in the horror genre. This was a pre-psycho horror movie that's about a mad scientist trying to fix his daughter's face after she loses it in a car accident. How he fixes her face is through forcing girls through surgery to do a face transplant. The imagery is great in this movie, but the plot gets a little repetitive and the pacing is way too slow. The soundtrack to this movie is great since it uses creepy carnival music, but it works in some scenes better than others. Overall, it's an alright film

11/8/24 "La Dolce Vita" 1960

This was a film that's been on my watch list for a while since it's such an iconic film, but I was sort of let down. This film doesn't really have too much of a plot, being more of a character study. We follow an Italian reporter, Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni) after his girlfriend dies of an overdose, so we see him chasing various women and taking a look at himself. This is a pretty interesting idea, but the film is 3 hours long and doesn't really need to be to me. I feel like the character of Marcello isn't too interesting, despite being played very well by the great Marcello Mastroianni. I just don't really get the hype.

6/9/24 "Can-Can" 1960

There's probably a reason why this musical isn't regarded as one of the greats, it's just not good. Cole Porter's songs just aren't as great in this as his previous works. They even put in the song "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)" but it just doesn't hit the same way. The plot is just a love triangle between Shirley MacClaine, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Jordan. Louis Jordan wants to expose Shirley MacClaine's nightclub act because she does the risque Can-can. Shirley's boyfriend, Sinatra doesn't like how much attention she's spending with Jordan. Meanwhile, Maurice Chevalier is just there and contributes nothing. MacClaine and Sinatra are great in this film, but they just don't get a lot of great material.

5/13/22 "Purple Noon" 1960

It's really interesting seeing a classic thriller because it really feels modern. The open felt a little dated when the man pretended to be blind to get a girl and all he got from her is a finger wag. The ending was unsatisfying and satisfying at the same time. A pretty interesting movie that dragged at some points, but overall pretty good

12/2/22 "Breathless" 1960

A French new-wave film that isn't afraid to take risks. This film has such a signature style of jump-cutting. It does get a little distracting at some points, but it really helps with the pacing. Instead of showing us obvious, and often unnecessary, shots, they skip ahead to make sure they can get the quick pace. The story itself is a very simple, yet interesting one, where it's about a man who committed murder and wants to take his love to Italy, but he doesn't treat her very well. The whole movie is about him trying to convince her to join him. The shots are very unique and don't really follow the classic Hollywood way of filming. There's a reason why Scorsese liked this movie and wanted to replicate the style in his films

9/18/24 "Peeping Tom" 1960

This feels so much like a Hitchcock film, I'm really surprised he didn't think of it. The film's about a filmmaker named Mark, who has experienced a lot of trauma since he was a kid and is making a documentary on fear. The only way he can capture true fear on camera is by murdering women on camera and then using their final moments to show true fear. His neighbor accidentally spots him during one of his filming sessions. It's really well shot, being directed by Michael Powell. There are some elements I really enjoyed, but I felt like the film didn't really live up to it's cool premise.

4/26/24 "L'Avventura" 1960

There are some really interesting ideas in this film that go underutilized. It's about a girl named Claudia going to an island with her friend Anna and Sandro, Anna's boyfriend. When they get to the island, Anna mysteriously goes missing. While looking for Anna, Claudia and Sandro fall in love, which makes the two feel very guilty. This is a really interesting idea, but with the two-hour and thirty-minute run-time, it feels like they either should've added more to it or shortened the movie. It explores the guilt Claudia feels pretty well, but that's about it.

9/9/25 "Village Of The Damned" 1960

This was a slow burn, but the ending was pretty great. The film follows a mysterious occurrence in a small town, where everyone becomes unconscious, and when they come to, all the women are pregnant. When the kids are born, they have very strange hair and all seem to be connected to one another. The kids do a tremendous job acting creepy, and the cinematography is really well done, but the story is just a bit too slow and not that scary.

11/19/24 "Inherit The Wind" 1960

It's sad how well this film has held up. The film is based on the Scopes trial (1925) where a school teacher (Scopes) was put on trial for teaching evolution in rural Tennessee. In this film, the teacher is played by Dick York (who does a great job in the role), the opposing lawyers are played by Spencer Tracy and Fredric March who are great as always, and then, in a really interesting role swap, Gene Kelly plays a nosy reporter. It's odd seeing Gene Kelly in a non-musical role, but he handles himself really well. The film is really well-acted and written, and it has some really clever lines and turns. This film has an interesting point about the importance of knowledge and how much we need education.

10/12/24 "Elmer Gantry" 1960

How was this supposed to compete with "The Apartment"? This came out the same year as that film and was up in a lot of the same categories. Burt Lancaster even won "Best Actor" over Jack Lemmon in that role. This film was very slow and boring. Nothing really came from this for me. We follow a conman who pretends to be a preacher until he meets a preacher's daughter and becomes one himself. It's not very special and just feels like an overdone premise. Overall, I just couldn't get into it.

11/2/22 "The Little Shop of Horrors" 1960

This was probably one of the weirdest films I saw. I grew up on the musical version of this movie (it was literally the first live-action movie I've ever seen) and this is basically the same movie but also very different. In this one, Seymour has a mother who's a hypochondriac, there's a main character whose main character trait is the fact he eats flowers, Audrey II is Audrey Jr, and JACK NICHOLSON IS IN THIS MOVIE. Yeah... a really young Jack Nicholson appears in this film (this is his fourth film) and when he blew up, he basically became the face of this movie since he's the only big-time star in this movie and he's only in it for 3 minutes. This movie is a lot wackier than the Broadway play and its story is a little bit of a mess. The voice actor of Audrey 2 isn't good whatsoever, but as a whole, it's a neat little B-movie that led to one of, if not, the best broadway musicals

10/1/24 "Black Sunday" 1960

This was a truly bizarre Italian film that feels years ahead of its time. It opens with a very brutal burning of a witch, right before they kill her, she puts a curse on their descendants. Centuries later, their descendants are on their way to a medical conference, when their carriage breaks and they have to stop for the night. A near look-alike of the witch is there in the mansion, but the witch is trying to possess the lookalike so she can live again. There are some great special effects and truly dreary imagery. This is a very gothic horror movie, which makes it really interesting to watch. The one thing is the shoddiness of the English dub. Some of the actors do an alright job, while others don't.

5/15/24 "Spartacus" 1960

I feel like it's hard to rate this movie. As a regular movie, it's a pretty good one! The action scenes were really well choreographed (it reminded me a lot of Kurosawa's Samurai films). Also, the story is very engaging where we follow the slave, Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), as he plots to escape with his fellow slaves to fight the system. I really enjoyed seeing the different people he recruits. This film is a historical epic, so a lot of the movie is dedicated to showing how expensive it was to make, which does take away some of the pacing when we just have long shots purely to show off their huge sets and large cast of extras. Why it's hard to rate this film, is because it's not a great Kubrick film. The shots are very "might as well" if that makes sense. In all his later films, the cinematography is incredible and led to some of the most creative and iconic shots in cinema history, whereas here it's not the same. There were better shots in "The Killing". As a whole, it's a good movie that's not really worth its 3-hour and 17-minute runtime.

1/13/25 "BUtterfield 8" 1960

It's interesting how this film is more known for its history with the Oscars than the actual film. This film is known for Elizabeth Taylor's win for "Best Actress", however, the circumstances of how she got it were very unfortunate. She hated this movie and only did it to finish her contract at MGM, so she could start working on "Cleopatra" at Fox. She was starring in this film with her new husband, Eddie Fisher (father of Carrie Fisher and unfaithful husband to Debbie Reynolds, Taylor's best friend). While the film was being finished, Taylor suffered a horrible Pneumonia which nearly killed her. The academy was put in a rough spot since they realized that Elizabeth might die without ever winning an award, so they gave her an award for this movie in case she didn't make it. Spoiler alter, she made it. It just stinks because I think Shirley MacClaine deserved it more for "The Apartment". The film itself is a standard melodrama that has a really bad ending. The writing isn't too special and just sort of happens. There's a reason why so many people forget this film.

10/12/25 "The Alamo" 1960

This was such a slog to get through. It was directed by John Wayne, and I can sort of tell. This gives "vanity project" with how overstuffed it was. Being three hours, the first two are just comprised of speeches, while the other hour is just boring fighting. The fact that this was up for "best picture" the same year as "The Apartment" is honestly a joke. This is such a nothing burger movie.

7/31/22 "One Hundred and One Dalmatians" 1961
6/10 Stars, Favorite Quote “Fifteen. Fifteen puppies! How marvelous! How marvelous! How perfectly! Oh, the devil take it, they're mongrels. No spots! No spots at all! What a horrid little white rat!”
This was one of the movies I thought I knew, but it's really completely different. When I was a kid, I thought that Perdita had just birthed 99 puppies, and I was so confused. The art style feels pretty different compared to the other movies. I feel like this one is less polished and a little rougher, but it adds to the film's charm. The outlines constantly move and change shape and you can still see the guidelines in some frames. The backgrounds are so stylish in this movie, they feel like a children's book which sets this movie apart from the others. It's weird watching this one after all of the previous ones because this movie was one of the first ones that were set in the modern day. We went from castles and dragons and cottages to Televisions, Cars, and apartments which makes this movie very unique. It's also interesting to see '60s TV because of how early it must've been. We really see the basic TV programming, serials, game shows, and commercials. This is the better dog movie than Lady and the Tramp

1/13/25 "Lola" 1961

It's insane to think that this was the first Jacques Demy film because it seems so advanced for a film debut. We follow a young man as he meets up with an old girlfriend, who's now a cabaret dancer and a mother. Things get complicated when he starts falling in love with her again. It's shot really well and the characters are very realistic. It was an interesting study of their love-affair and how they were affected by it. It's not quite his best, but for his first film, it's quite good!

7/9/25 "Yojimbo" 1961

A lot of people always list this as one ofn the best movies every made, but I just didn't really see the appeal. It's a good movie, but I wouldn't consider it one of the best. The shots are really well done and so's the dialogues, but the action scenes just dragged for me. We follow a Ronin as he gets hired by two opposing businessmen who are trying to take control of a small village. He uses these two to start a gang war. I can definitely see the influence on Sergio Leone's work and Clint Eastwood's entire career.

1/3/25 "Viridiana" 1961

I just don't think I'm a fan of Luis Buñuel's work. Every film of his I see, I always say, "I'm going to like the next one," but it just hasn't happened. This film follows the young Viridiana, a nun who gets sent to watch after her old uncle, who is a widower. The problem is, she looks like his dead wife, so he seduces her. Really weird stuff. I just couldn't get into this movie like other people can. I just found it too bizarre.

11/21/24 "Last Year At Marienbad" 1961

This was a pretty interesting film. Not a lot happened, but the shots and characters were interesting. We follow a man at a party who finds a woman who he has met before. The problem is, that she doesn't seem to remember who he is, so he tries to convince her that they met and fell in love in Marienbad in Czech. This film is told in flashbacks, so the shots are really interesting, but the story doesn't have the same intrigue. I understand why many critics enjoy it, but it just wasn't for me.

7/5/24 "A Raisin In The Run" 1961

This was a really interesting film. I've never read or seen the original play, so this is my first experience with the material. It follows an African-American family who gets a large sum of money as they decide what to do. The son (Sidney Poitier) wants to spend the money on a new business investment, while his mother (Claudia McNeil) wants them to buy a house. This essentially boils down to the old vs new view of the American dream. It's a really interesting film, but it's pretty slow. It's extremely important, but it wasn't the most engaging film out there.

5/21/25 "The Exiles" 1961

This film has a set-up that you rarely see in Hollywood. It's part documentary and part narrative film. We follow a group of Native Americans who left their reservations to go to California. We follow a night in their lives. It's a really interesting because of how realistic it felt. The narrative is fiction, but they have audio from interviews, and the actors do a great job portraying their characters. There isn't a lot of plot, but the film is more for the feel.

7/12/22 "Breakfast At Tiffany's" 1961

I did not like this movie. I feel like it reflects the main character's identity problem because this movie doesn't know what it is. It's not funny enough to be a comedy, it's not romantic enough to be a rom-com, and it's not that dramatic so I don't know what this is supposed to be. Mickey Rooney's character is really terrible because of how outdated and racist it is.

12/6/24 "Splendor In The Grass" 1961

I was pretty surprised with this movie. It definitely feels a bit like a retread of Rebel Without a Cause, but I found this to be a little more interesting. We follow two teenagers, Wilma (Natalie Wood) and Bud (Warren Beatty in his film Debut) who are in love, but their parents detest their relationship. Wilma's mom wants her to stay pure, and abstain from having sex, while Bud's dad doesn't want him getting her pregnant and ruining his plan for his son. We see how they slowly drift apart and how they're not too good together. It's a really interesting film which I think earns it's Best Screenplay win.

11/6/25 "Through a Glass Darkly" 1961

I feel like Ingmar Bergman showed a lot of restraint with this movie. This film has a small cast and just a handful of locations, all of which are used to show the severity of mental illness. The film follows a woman going to her family's cottage during the summer after returning from a mental hospital. It's rough to see her in this condition and how her illness is breaking up her marriage with her husband, who's upset with how she's withdrawn from him. While not his best film, this is a certain a human film with a lot of emotional torment.

3/10/22 "West Side Story" 1961
9/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "Why do you kids live like there's a war on?"
I was scared to watch this movie since it might be overhyped, but this film is wonderful. The choreography is incredible, I was amazed at how intricate it was. I also loved the camera angles and lighting, those were incredible. The acting choices were a little odd (IE the brown face), but they did well. Overall, worth every drip of hype, amazing movie. I'm a little scared to see the new one though. Oh yeah, shout out to all the songs. All of them are great

5/11/25 "Flower Drum Song" 1961

It's odd how Jazz-infused this Rodgers and Hammerstein musical was. This musical is notable for being one of the first major Hollywood films with a majority Asian-American cast. The story follows a family from Hong Kong moving to San Francisco in search of a new life. Mei Li (Miyoshi Umeki) is arranged to marry the nightclub owner, Sammy (Jack Soo), but Sammy has his eyes on the singer in his club, Linda Low (Nancy Kwan). The original Broadway director for this musical was none other than Gene Kelly, and you can really see his influence in a lot of the choreography. There are certainly a lot of aspects of this film that hasn't aged all too well, but for the sixties it's pretty ahead of it's time.

8/23/24 "The Innocents" 1961

This was a really great horror film. It has some incredible shots that add to the mystery of the film. It follows the classic set up of a governess watching over two kids in their giant mansion. As time progressed, however, the governess discovers that the house might be haunted. It's a slow burn, but very satisfying to watch. The effects are done really well, especially for the time. It's really great.

11/23/25 "Judgement at Nuremberg" 1961
10/10 Stars, Favorite Quote: "To be logical is not to be right, and nothing on God's earth could ever make it right!" Do they say the title of the movie within the movie: Yes
This is one of the most nuanced and thoughtful looks at World War 2 put on film. This film follows one of the trials at Nuremberg, where a chief justice from the United States (Spencer Tracy) has to decide whether a group of German judges and doctors have to pay for the crimes of the holocaust, or if they were just following orders. This film is really bold in its portrayals, not only with the subject matter and the acting, but even the camera movements. This film constantly breaks the 180 rule to create a sense of dizziness, as well as utilizing quick zooms on the characters. I love the way that the film poses the question of whether the German people are truly to blame for the holocaust. We see a calmer, prettier Germany through the Marlene Dietrich character. Nothing in this film, however, could've prepared me for the actual concentration camp footage. It was a heart-wrenching moment and was such a bold move on Stanley Kramer's part. The cast of this movie is filled with amazing actors, and everyone brings it. Judy Garland and Montgomery Clift don't have a lot of screentime, but they're given great material to work with. The best performance has to be the one that won an Oscar, Maximilian Schell. He is a powerhouse in this film as a German lawyer fighting for the Nazi doctors. He can be so hateable but with a strange charisma that reminds me of Christoph Waltz. This film is one of the best courtroom dramas that has so much working for it. It's a debate of morals that many directors today are too scared to do.

6/23/23 "One, Two, Three" 1961
8/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "Any world that can produce the Taj Mahal, William Shakespeare, and Stripe toothpaste can't be all bad." Do they say the title of the movie within the movie: Yes!
This is a pretty underrated Billy Wilder film. It's a rebirth of the screwball comedy genre and doesn't let you forget it. The speed is so breakneck fast that it just adds to the manic humor of the film. This can be attributed to its lead, James Cagney, who I'm learning is one of the most versatile actors. He did dramas (White Heat, We're No Angels, and The Public Enemy), Musicals (Footlight Parade, Yankee Doodle Dandee, and Love Me Or Leave Me) but he rarely did comedies. When he did, they wouldn't really do too well. This film proves that he has some incredible comedic chops. The film is about James Cagney trying to get ahead at the Coca-Cola company in West Berlin, so he agrees to watch his boss's daughter. Problems start to arise though when she finds herself in love with a communist from East Berlin, which ruins his chances for a promotion, so he tries anything to get him out of the picture. It's funny how this might not be one of Billy Wilder's best films despite being a great movie. When you've made films like Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot, Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Stalag 17, Ace In The Hole, A Witness For The Prosecution, and The Apartment, it's crazy that you can still make great films

9/13/25 "Pocketful of Miracles" 1961

This is it, Frank Capra's last movie. His last film being a remake of one of his earlier films, is such an interesting close to his legacy. In this movie, we follow a poor apple-seller (Bette Davis) who sells apples to a gangster (Glenn Ford). These apples are lucky for the gangster, so he tries to find a way to repay her. She takes him up on the favor when her daughter (Ann-Margaret) is getting married to royalty and she needs to pretend to be high-class. This film has very similar themes to Capra's earlier work (including a very sweet finale), even having two actors from his previous work, Edward Everett Horton and Thomas Mitchell, make appearances. While the film is really funny, the selling point is Bette Davis's acting. She really puts her all into this role and makes the film what it is.

7/8/24 "The Children's Hour" 1961

I was not expecting this film to (somewhat) openly talk about the LGBTQ community. This was made in 1961, which was still a pretty censored time. This film is about two women running a private school, Karen (Audrey Hepburn) and Martha (Shirley MacClaine). Karen is about to get married to Dr. Joe (James Gardner). One of the students at their school (Karen Balkin), is fed up with them constantly punishing her for lying, so she starts a rumor with her aunt that Karen and Martha are in a lesbian relationship. It was a very hot topic issue, especially in the 60's. The original play was written in 1934, and when they adapted it to the screen in the thirties, they had to change it to a heterosexual affair (Miriam Hopkins who originated the role of Martha in film plays her aunt, which is a nice touch). This film is really well-written and has you sympathize with the characters as they basically had everything taken away from them just because a little girl was mad at them.

6/29/22 "Divorce Italian Style" 1961
6/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "Have you really got another headache?"
This movie has a pretty novel concept. The whole movie is about a man who wants to divorce his wife, but can't due to divorce being illegal in Italy. So what he does is try to get his wife to cheat on him so that way she'll go to jail and they can legally get a divorce. There are some pretty good bits in this dark comedy, like how one couple is always secretly having sex, and whenever the main character walks in they always have to explain how it's "not what it looks like" only for the main character not to care. It's interesting that this film shows La Dolce Vita because the guy who played the main character in that movie is also the main character in this movie (he's also the main character in 8 1/2). This was a pretty solid comedy, it was just slow in some places, but that's kind of the Italian Style (boom! ... laugh.)

6/7/22 "Lover Come Back" 1961

This movie is such an odd entry. It's basically a rip-off of "Pillow Talk" but by the same studio and with the same actors. It's funny because if you look up "Lover Come Back" on Letterboxd you will see a picture from Pillow Talk (the "Rolly Poly" scene) Both movies are about Doris Day and Rock Hudson had a rivalry but Rock Hudson later gets confused for another person by Doris Day and he pretends he is that person because it benefits his personal gain. They fall in love but Doris Day finds out he was lying and breaks things up only later to love each other with Randall Park pouring his heart and soul into his character. This movie is different because they are in the advertising business. Rock Hudson bribes a girl into lying in court by filming a commercial for a product that doesn't even exist called "VIP". The plot arises when Randall Park accidentally sends out the commercials and it becomes a big product. The only problem is VIP doesn't exist in any form, so they have to invent VIP. This makes such a fun added plot point, but I feel like Pillow Talk had Randall Park play a more prominent role. He's great in this film, he plays this neurotic boss who believes that it's harder to be rich than it is to be poor. Overall this is a very good comedy that proves that a screwball comedy can work in a modern(ish) setting

This was a pretty interesting and influential movie. This film is about a singer named Cleo waiting for her biopsy, so we follow her through the day as she tries to deal with the news. The film follows Cleo from 5 pm to 7 pm as she waits for the news. It's such an interesting setup with such a perfect way of filming. It feels ahead of its time. Cleo is an interesting character to follow. This is the first Agnes Varda film I've seen, and it makes me want to watch more of her films.

1/20/25 "Experiment In Terror" 1962

It's hard to believe this was made by the same guy who made "The Pink Panther". This film follows a young woman named Kelly Sherwood (Lee Remick) who starts to get berated by a man on the phone to help him steal a large amount from the bank or he will kill her family. She receives these calls day and night, so she gets the police on her side to try to track this guy down. It's a very tense movie that has some great moments throughout. It's a bit long in some places, but as a whole, this was a really well put together film.

4/29/24 "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" 1962

I wouldn't consider myself a Western fan. I found most of the plots way too cliche and the morals deeply rooted in a troubled past, but this film was fantastic. It's about an old senator named Ransom Stoddard (Jimmy Stewart), who returns to his hometown to attend the funeral of his friend, Tom (John Wayne). While there, he discusses how the two met and how they defeated the evil Liberty Valance. Jimmy Stewart does an incredible job in this film as well as John Wayne. This film was supposed to be in color, but John Ford fought the studio to get it in black and white, which was the right choice. The colorless look of the film lends to the darker feel of the film. This is one of the best westerns I've ever seen and I highly recommend it.

1/16/25 "The Exterminating Angel" 1962

It's odd watching this film because it feels like a previous version of "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie". This film follows a group of high-society folk having a dinner party. At the end of the evening, they all retire to the music room, only to find that they can't leave. There were some surreal scenes, which I quite enjoyed, but these were few and far between. I just couldn't really get into it.

2/14/25 "The Miracle Worker" 1962

This is the classic story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. Just as a refresher, Helen Keller (Patty Duke) is a 7-year old girl who was born deaf and blind. Her parents recruit the 20-year old Annie Sullivan (Anne Bancroft), who just recently got her sight, so she tries to teach Keller how to speak. It's interesting to see how Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan's relationship develops. I think, while Bancroft gives a good performance, the Oscar should've gone to Bette Davis in "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?"

4/30/24 "That Touch Of Mink" 1962

This feels like a weaker version of "Pillow Talk" with the way this is written. It was written by the same guy, but it's not as smart or clever. It's about a woman (Doris Day) getting covered in mud by a big boss (Cary Grant) as he drives by. He feels bad so he meets with her to apologize. The two fall in love, but he wants a fling and she wants a marriage. It wasn't that funny and a lot of the jokes sort of fell flat. Day, Grant, and Audrey Meadows (from The Honeymooners) try their best but are weighed down by the poor script.

3/23/23 "Lolita" 1962

Kubrick is at it again with another great film. Lolita is a dark film about a middle-aged British man named Humpert Humpert who moves to America and stays at a woman's inn. Everything changes when he meets the woman's daughter, a teenager named Lolita. It's such a horrible thing to see his obsession grow throughout the film. Everyone does a great job in their roles (especially Peter Sellers). This film is two and a half hours long, but it uses the time so well that you'd hardly notice. Certified classic.

8/23/22 "The Music Man" 1962

WOW! What a musical! This is one of the biggest juggernauts of pure slappers. Watching this movie I forgot how many famous songs are in it. "Rock Island", "Ya Got Trouble", "76 Trombones", "Goodnight my Someone", "Pick-a-little talk-a-little", "Till there was you", "The Wells Fargo Wagon", "Gary, Indiana", "Shipoopi". I love how the songs are integrated like how one song is a piano warm-up that they sing while a child is on the piano because they want to help her out. This whole movie has a great plot and great characters that make this a stand-out musical

10/16/23 "Carnival of Souls" 1962

This is such an influential horror film that inspired films like "Night of the Dead", "The Sixth Sense", and "Mulholland Drive". It's about a young girl trying to get a fresh start in Salt Lake City after surviving a car crash where all her friends died. While adapting to Salt Lake City, she keeps getting visions of a ghoulish man appearing everywhere, and she's compelled to go to this old abandoned circus for some reason. The film is shot really well and does a great job with its 33,000 dollar budget. This is less than "Night of the Living Dead", "Eraserhead", and "The Blair Witch Project". This film aged extremely well and has such great imagery that still intrigues audiences today

7/9/24 "The Manchurian Candidate" 1962

I thought I would like this a lot more, but I just couldn't really get into this. It follows a group of soldiers at the end of the Korean War getting brainwashed by communists before they return home. Everything seems to be going perfectly fine, but the soldiers start to have strange nightmares. This leads to suspicion of a conspiracy. Honestly, this is very Cold War-coded, but they don't really do a lot with the premise. The mystery isn't really that well executed. There are some great moments of dread, but the whole movie wasn't really worth it. Topic name

12/31/24 "How The West Was Won" 1962

This film is like looking at a viewfinder, it's very beautiful to look at but it just doesn't have enough substance. This is a nearly three-hour, western epic where we follow a family as we see the Wild West get formed from 1839 to 1889. This film is noted for two things, its insane cast and the Cinerama. This film is filled with stars like Debbie Reynold, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, Caroll Baker, etc. While all these stars are great in their own right, they barely have enough time here to stand out, and all sort of just merge together. It's especially hard to see the celebrities due to the Cinerama. The film was shot using three cameras, so when it's on a large, widescreen, the picture quality will be better. The problem is, that a lot of the shots had to deal with the fact that not everyone has this new technology, so the shots are composed awkwardly with everyone being smushed to the center. It's like those A.I. Instagram videos where they artificially stretch a film's aspect ratio leading to a lot of empty space. Since it was shot so wide, when people are far away from the camera, you can't recognize them too well. What's the point of having these big stars when you can't even see them? This whole film seems like a product of its time with both the Western genre and Historical Epic dying out. It's odd that this won an Oscar for writing, especially when paired against 8 1/2.

5/29/23 "Gypsy" 1962

They should've brought back Ethel Merman to play this role. Rosalind Russell is a great actress, don't get me wrong, but she's not a good singer whatsoever. As a whole, this movie was filled with bad singers. Natalie Wood was Gypsy in this film and it felt like she didn't want to be there at all. She couldn't sing either. Karl Malden made a great Herbie Sommers, he's a very underrated actor for how natural he can be, but he can't sing either. They had to cut the number "Together, Wherever We Go" since the three of them were so bad. Hey! Maybe if they can't sing one of the most famous songs from the musical maybe recast them? The pacing in this film is very off. They start the main conflict of the film 90 minutes into it and then it still drags on for another hour. Also, they completely ruin the point of the OG musical by trying to have us sympathize with Rose. She's an awful person and that's the point, we shouldn't feel bad for her manipulating everyone in her life because "she's a hard worker". Just watch Music Man, it's the superior 1962 musical

7/16/22 "Lawrence Of Arabia" 1962

ARGGHHH this was a rough watch. This might get me in some hot water since Lawrence of Arabia is a very beloved film. It's won the 1962 oscar if that means anything, but I don't know, I just didn't like it. I feel like the story dragged on due to its enormous length. This is an Epic movie, meaning that it's a high-budget film with a long run time. These are the type of films that'll have scenes where they just show off the wealth of the studio by having 1,000 extras just stand there (The casualty scene from Gone With The Wind, the coronation scene from The Last Emperor, the bar scene from Dr. Zhivago, etc.). I don't like these types of movies because I feel like they throw away pacing and characterization so that way they can focus on showing off. The character of Lawrence was pretty interesting because he's between the Arabians and the British. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) is in this movie and I thought "Oh! I'm excited to see him in one of the British scenes!" but he was Prince Feisal of Iraq... yikes. This was part of an era in film history where the movie just kept getting bigger and bigger until they got so big that they just naturally became box office bombs. Cleopatra was the number 1 film in 1963 but still is considered a bomb since they spent 31 million dollars (that's $292,888,202.61 in today's money). This is a film that started to show the end of an era. The next era would be the character-focused, film school 70's

12/4/25 "Jumbo" 1962

This was a suprisingly well-shot musical. It's based on the 30s musical of the same name by Rodgers and Hart (although with a different plot). We follow a daughter and father (Doris Day and Jimmy Durante, respectively), as they run a circus that's not doing too well. Durante has been engaged to the fortune teller (Martha Raye) for 14 years, but they've never had time to marry. One day, a man randomly shows up (Stephen Boyd) and joins the circus. Boyd and Day fall in love, as it's revealed to the audiences that he's the son of the rival circus owner, who sent him to buy their circus (and their prized elephant, Jumbo). This film has some great gags with a really strong cast (Martha Raye is a very underrated actress). Some of the jokes don't really land as hard, but the cahracters are really well defined and lead to an enjoyable film.

6/24/22 "To Kill A Mockingbird" 1962

This movie is a very important film but I feel like the book is more important. This is a pretty faithful adaptation but that means if you've read the book you know every step of the way. Gregory Peck does phenomenally as Atticus Finch, but everyone else is either just okay or isn't that good. The child acting in this film can be a little shotty at times and the delivery can be a little flat. However, this film should've won the 1962 Oscars because of the time when this film came out. Coming out in 1962 (before the civil rights act) this movie was very important for the time and represents that year in the film better than Lawrence of Arabia could've. This is a film you should see

7/31/24 "Days Of Wine and Roses" 1962

It's so odd to think that this is a Blake Edwards film. I've always pictured Edwards as the Pink Panther guy or the Great Race guy. This film follows Joe Clay (Jack Lemmon) an alcoholic who meets a girl, Kirsten Arnesen (Lee Remick), who doesn't drink. He feels like they don't have a lot in common, so he turns her onto alcohol and accidentally leads her down the road of becoming an alcoholic with him. This is probably the most diabolical role Jack Lemmon has ever played. This might be one of my favorite performances of his. It's not as subtle as C.C. Baxter, but it certainly showcases his dramatic chops (the greenhouse scene and monologue he gives are fantastic). This feels a lot like The Lost Weekend by Billy Wilder, but I feel like this goes deeper into the reaches of addiction, coming off more like a Requiem For A Dream type movie. I think the ending is perfect and the movie as a whole was incredible. I would highly recommend it.

3/29/22 "8 1/2" 1963
6/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "HAHAHA He is LOST... he has NOTHING TO SAY"
There's too much to discuss with this film. I feel like the best parts of the movie are whenever Guido is in a dream sequence since those are always well done and really give insight into Guido's character. I wish the movie had more of these how ever because I find that the movie can get a tad confusing at times. I can't really distinguish many of the female characters since they are all written very similarly. The title of this movie was also a letdown. I thought it was going to be a deep insight into his character, but it was just because the director made 7 films and 2 episodes of the film, making this his 8 1/2 film. It's clear this movie is supposed to be about Fellini (the director) since the movie's about a film director making the film too personal. There was an odd dream scene when Guido was just whipping women as they yelled with delight which was an odd choice. This was also the serious scene where he was confronted with all of his previous lovers. I liked the scene with the interviewers because it feels pretty realistic. The ending was also an interesting turn. It definitely gave me big fish energy, but overall this movie wasn't really for me. To quote the man in the movie line in Annie Hall, "Fellini is a technical director".

10/14/25 "Winter Light" 1963

This might shock you reading this, but this Ingmar Bergman film was pretty bleak. We follo a priest in a small town as he begins to question his faith as he feels like he's forsaken many people who needs his help. Ingmar Bergman really knows how to hang onto a shot and let the audience care. There was a shot that really impressed me where he placed the woman giving a testimony in the dead center of the camera and had her talking into it for about five minutes. Any other director would fear for the audiences attention or that the actress wouldn't be able to make it interesting, but it really paid off. I think it might've been what inspired Woody Allen to do the same for the beginning of Annie Hall.

12/12/25 "High and Low" 1963

This often gets called one of the best movies of all time, but I just don't really get the hype. We follow a rich man when his family gets kidnapped. It's shot well, and certain aspects really work, but it wasn't as thrilling as I thought it was going to be. It was a bit of a slog to get through at times. There are great actors in this, but I just don't understand the hype.

8/16/22 "The Birds" 1963

Hitchcock is out of his element here. Hitchcock films strive for horror stories that are based on reality. This is far beyond the realm of reality. This whole film is dependent on you having ornithophobia (the fear of birds), which most people aren't. This film just wasn't scary, at some points it felt like it was parodying itself with how ridiculous the premise was. What's worse is how they never explain why the birds are attacking or how they get the strength, or why Melanie entering the town caused this. Honestly, the worst Hitchcock movie ever.

5/12/23 "Bye Bye Birdie" 1963

This was a classic musical that I was itching to see. I felt bad as a theater kid who didn't really know Bye Bye Birdie, and I'm glad I checked it out! It is one of the campiest musicals I have ever seen but in a good way. It's just fun! Although, my gripe is the severely underdeveloped plot. Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh are supposed to get married, but she's mad that he's too attached to his mother to do anything, which would make a fine plot, but they get barely any time to fulfill this, instead focusing on another plot entirely. We focus mainly on the McAfee family, whose daughter gets selected to kiss Conrad Birdie (Basically Elvis Presley of that universe) before he goes to the army. Dick Van Dyke is involved since he wrote the last song he'll sing before going to the army. The best part of this movie easily is the hilarious Paul Lynde who plays Mr. McAfee, he always delivers his lines in the best way. It was also a nice touch to get Ed Sullivan to play himself in the movie, he's really natural and is really funny! Some of the singing is questionable, and some of the dance sequences are shot oddly, but other than that the great songs and funny moments really push this movie to be a 7

7/23/23 "The Nutty Professor" 1963

This is my first true Jerry Lewis movie. I've seen him in "King Of Comedy" and his 3-second cameo in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" but never in a film that he directed. I started with this film since it's easily his most popular film, but wow was it bad. My problem comes from how wacky the film is. I can handle silliness like the Marx Brothers films, but no, this film is a completely other entity. Most of the jokes rely on what wacky face Jerry Lewis makes as the nutty professor and it gets tiresome. This isn't even accounting for his nutty voice which gets on your nerves really quickly. The story is your classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story where a weak nerd, Julius Kelp, makes a potion to make him into the cool, handsome Buddy Love (who's clearly just him making fun of Dean Martin after they broke up as a duo). The problem is that Buddy Love is a big old jerk, so the girl he loves (who's his student by the way) doesn't like him when he's Buddy Love. Buddy Love is written exactly like how you would expect a character would be written by the actor who plays him. Everyone can't get enough of Buddy and how hot he is and how talented he is and how cool he is. Basically just Jerry Lewis patting Jerry Lewis on the back. I can understand how this was a big film for the time, but time has not been kind to the Nutty Professor

7/6/23 "Irma La Douce" 1963

Yet another Billy Wilder romp and this might be his silliest film. Jack Lemmon is a cop in Paris who busts an illegal pimp organization, but he unknowingly falls in love with Shirley MacClaine, who's a prostitute. So he decided to go through several silly plots to try to get her off the streets. Billy Wilder's writing is as sharp as ever, but he makes Jack Lemmon's character unlikable at some points, especially when he makes the character do something that is completely out of character and shocking. One thing I do like a lot about this film is the bartender character. A running joke with him is how intelligent and how deep his lore gets. He always talks about how he's done better things than being a bartender, but they're always "a story for another day". A pretty funny film, but The Apartment is obviously a better Lemmon, Wilder, and MacClaine film

8/11/24 "Cleopatra" 1963

I'm not a huge fan of historical epics, and this didn't really change my mind. This film was meant to be two different movies. The first one was about Julius Caesar while the second follows Marc Anthony. Fox, however, wanted to rival Lawrence of Arabia, so they made it one long, overstuffed film. The actors do a good job, but the script is really boring and most of the scenes are made just to show off the wealth of Fox. This film single-handedly killed the film epic and led the way for the New Wave of cinema.

8/9/22 "The Great Escape" 1963

What's that? A three-hour movie that can be entertaining?! Who knew? This one had me pretty gripped to the story and characters. They actually spent time for us to get to know the characters and their quirks and what makes them them. I also enjoyed how this was based on a real story, it's crazy how complex the escape was and how well it was executed. I feel like this is an iconic movie everyone should see.

1/31/23 "Tom Jones" 1963

Unfortunately, this wasn't about the singer. This is an awful comedy that didn't make me laugh once. This film is 2 hours of basically nothing. You can see this in the Wikipedia article. Tom Jones' plot is written out completely and is summed up in 22 sentences. That seems like a lot, but it's really a small plot. "The Kid" by Charlie Chaplin has 23 sentences and is half the length. This film is also really weird. Not "funny haha weird" like "what did I just see" weird It makes me more made that this was a comedy. Other comedic greats got thrown aside while this movie won. In my professional opinion, The Great Escape should've won.

6/13/22 "The Haunting" 1963
5/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "You may not believe in ghosts, but you cannot deny terror."
This is another one of those movies where my expectations were probably way too high. I saw the Netflix TV show first which was an amazing show. I've also heard nothing but great things about this movie like being Scorsese's favorite horror movie but I feel like it falls flat. For being called the Haunting there are very few hauntings. I feel like (I hate bringing this up) the Netflix show has a better haunting-to-story ratio. The TV show changes a lot about the base story but I like the changes they make. In the TV show, it's a family who has to deal with a hill house while here it's three strangers and a doctor. This movie has Nell, Luke, and Theo (while in the show it adds Shirley, Steven, and their mom and dad). Theo is the most interesting character because she's supposed to be lesbian. It is heavily implied that she's gay because of all the ways that she would flirt with Nell. There were also some pretty impressive shots, and wacky zoom-ins that reminded me of Sam Raimi. Overall I can see why people would like this movie but it's not for me. I'm glad I watched it though because it made me appreciate the TV series more, the changes they made were worthwhile and made the story better.

12/20/23 "Contempt" 1963

I'm really disappointed with this one. I loved Breathless, so I thought this would be along the same lines, but it really wasn't. Reading the description, it makes it sound like it's going to be a look at Hollywood, and it sort of is. The problem is most of it is just a melodramatic look at a couple (and not a really thrilling one). There are some good lines and good scenes, but I feel like this is one of Godard's weaker films.

4/17/22 "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" 1963

This is one of the only movie epics that I can really get behind. This movie is about 2 hours and 40 minutes long, but it's very fun to watch. It doesn't really get dull until just about the third act. The movie is about 5 guys finding a man who's dying on the road and he tells them about a treasure that's hidden under a "big W". The 5 men and 3 of their wives try to find a way to split the money evenly when they discover that that won't be an easy task. After making that realization, it's a wild goose chase as each party tries to find the treasure first. As each party goes off and splits up, they meet more people which means more parties get made, so it moves very naturally as you follow each separate party. Of course, you can't talk about this movie without its all-star cast. When I mean an "Epic Movie" I don't mean the 2010s "Epic" I mean that it's a high-budget long film and you can see that. In the main cast, you have Mickey Rooney, Spencer Tracy, Ethel Merman, Buddy Hackett, Dick Shawn, Phil Silvers, Jonathan Winters, and more. That's just the supporting cast because in the movie they have a lot of fun "Blink and you'll miss it" cameos from huge stars like Jerry Lewis, Buster Keaton, The Three Stooges, Jim Backus, Joe E. Brown, Carl Reiner, Don Knotts, Sterling Holloway, Edward Everett Horton, and more. The whole thing is one big fun chase that comments on how easily people can go mad when money is involved. If you can get past that this movie is nearly three hours long, I suggest it.

4/30/24 "Charade" 1963

It's so weird watching this film and thinking "How is this not a Hitchcock film". If this were to be a Hitchcock film, this would be one of his better offerings in my opinion. This film is an absolute powerhouse at what it goes for. It's a mix between a spy-thriller and a romantic comedy that makes the audience really invested. It's about a woman named Regina Lampert (Audrey Hepburn) finding out that her husband was murdered while she was on a ski trip in France. While in France, she began falling in love with Peter Joshua (Cary Grant). They soon find out that her husband's three old WW2 associates are trying to kill them because the husband stole the 25,000 dollars that the group stole from the French government. The film is extremely well-written with a lot of funny jokes and great twists and turns. I would highly suggest this film.

This was a must-see film for me. The Pink Panther movies are some of the biggest comedy movies that so many people love. I wanted to get in on the hype so I watched the first one. My biggest problem with this one is the lack of Inspector Clouseau. This film is more focused on David Niven and Capucine. This film dragged in the first half because Peter Sellers was barely in it. Peter Sellers is a comedic icon and just the little bits we get from him in this film are comedy gold. Many of the scenes are dragged out with Sir Charles Lytton and Simone Clouseau. The second half gets a lot better because they implement a lot more Jacques Clouseau. This also changes the tone of the movie, since the first half focuses more on the crime aspect while the second half focuses on the comedy, especially during the bedroom scene which is staged perfectly. Also, who can forget how perfect that music is, fits the mood so well. This was a good start to a franchise, but definitely not the best

6/2/22 "The Sword In The Stone" 1963

Another Disney movie but probably the worst of the era. Walt was busy working on EPCOT and Disneyworld, so he had very little involvement which led to this film is a mess. For instance, Arthur had 3 voices since one actor went through puberty mid-way through production so they needed a new voice for him, but all 3 of the voices sound so different and it's not smooth whatsoever. The movie also has a villain who's there for about 10 minutes and then leaves. Overall this is a messy film that probably should've been made. The only time Disney has referenced this movie existing was Excalibur being at the Disney parks... that's it

1/25/22 "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb" 1964

This movie was delightfully weird and had such gripping satire of the cold war and nuclear war. It's impossible to talk about this movie without Peter Seller's incredible three way performance as Cpt. Mandrake, President Muffley, and Dr. Strangelove. The writing in this movie is great, and really lends itself to the comedy. The best part about the comedy in this movie is how they deliver it. If you only listen to the tone of their voices, it sounds like it's a drama but if you listen to what they are saying, it's quite funny. I love the deadpan nature, everyone is deadpan except for Strangelove of course. It was a little confusing, but I enjoyed it

12/30/25 "Viva Las Vegas" 1964

It's crazy how good this Elvis film was. Elvis films are known for being cash cows, but they don't offer much. This film was pretty good! This all comes down to the brilliant casting of Ann Margret. Margret brings an energy to the film that's infectious (especially with Elvis). The two had a love affair behind the scenes, which is very clear. The film is about a speed racer (Elvis) who needs money for a new engine having to work in Las Vegas to get the funds to race again. He gets the money through gambling at first, but when he runs into a pool manager (Ann Margret) he tries to get her to date him, which causes her to push him in the pool and get his money unintentionally sucked up by a pool drain. The songs in this film are really great (Viva Las Vegas, What'd I Say, The Lady Loves Me, I Need Somebody to Lean On, etc.).

12/31/23 "What A Way To Go!" 1964

This film has always intrigued me because of how many people are in it. It's about a rich widow (Shirley MacLaine) trying to give all her money to the IRS to eliminate her wealth. She explains to a psychiatrist that she has always wanted a simple life, but she accidentally causes all of her husbands to become rich and greedy. She's had four husbands who all have died because of their wealth. The four husbands are Dick Van Dyke, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, and Gene Kelly. It's a really fun and campy that doesn't take itself so seriously. With each husband, she compares her situation to a different type of movie which cuts to them parodying said genre. It was a lot of fun to see these parodies as well as see how Shirley MacLaine inadvertently caused not only their rise to success but also their untimely death. An underrated player in this is Bob Cummings as her psychiatrist. Throughout the movie, we cut to her talking to him and he does a good job of showing how confusing and over the top this whole situation is. It's sad to hear that this was supposed to be a Marilyn Monroe movie before she died. This also was supposed to have Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, David Niven, and Gregory Peck, but they decided against it. I highly recommend this film, it's not groundbreaking, but it's really a lot of fun and very over the top!

Maybe the best film in the franchise? This is an odd film since it's a pink panther film but sort of? It was originally a French play, and the movie adaptation was going to have Peter Sellers in it. Blake Edwards was asked to direct the film, and he agreed but only if he could make Sellers' character Clouseau and they could improv on the spot. It's slower than the later films, but definitely funnier than the first one. This is the film that introduces several recurring characters like Dreyfus, Cato, and François, who all are great. Peter Sellers is especially great in this film, some of his best gags are here. This is definitely on the same level as "The Pink Panther Returns" and better than the original. Although the opening sequence was the weakest and had no Pink Panther theme, so that takes away a few points

9/8/25 "Robin and The 7 Hoods" 1964

This is such a campy little musical from the '60s. It's a Rat Pack film that takes the story of Robin Hood and plants it in the roaring twenties with gangsters. It's fun to see how the actors are all obviously friends and really have great chemistry. The story can be a little weak, but the songs are pretty well done. Obvious standouts being "Style", "Mr. Booze", "Bang-Bang", "Don’t Be A Do-Badder", and arguably the one song that had a life outside of the film, "My Kind Of Town". As a whole, this was sort of a sign that the musical genre wasn't really going to last, especially in a post-JFK assassination world.

10/10/22 "The Masque Of The Red Death" 1964
7/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "Why should you be afraid to die? Your soul has been dead for a long long time."
Iwasn't expecting this one to be as good as it was. Roger Corman (director of the original little shop of Horrors) was directing several Edgar Allen Poe adaptations from 1960 to 1964 (almost all of them with Vincent Price). He picked a great story with this one and I really feel like this is as topical as it was back then. The whole plot is focused on the Red Death which is a disease that is passing through Europe that causes people to die horribly and have their skin turn a bright red. The rich are protected as the poor beg to be saved, the problem is the prince of the castle is a Satanist who wants to corrupt. The whole story is very gripping and the direction is done very well. It is very campy, but that's part of the charm. Bright colors, exaggerated drama, extravagant sets, etc. This is a movie that should be remade in my opinion because it fits in now more than it did back then

2/19/24 "Marnie" 1964

This is a somewhat interesting Hitchcock film that has some questionable morals. So the movie's about a woman named Marnie (Tippi Hendren), who lies, cheats, and steals all the time. She changes her name and appearance and applies to several jobs to steal from them. This all changes when she gets followed by Mark Rutland (Sean Connery) who baits her into a job. When he catches her stealing again, he blackmails her into marrying him because he's grown an obsession with her. He slowly learns that she's unwell, so he tries to get to the bottom of her case. This sounds like an interesting idea for a film if Hitchcock can decide whether Mark's the hero of the story or the villain. In some scenes, he's filmed like he's a monster, which he is! He does some really messed up things in the film. In the end, however, he's treated like the hero of the story. I can understand if Hitchcock was going for a more morally grey character, but the fact that the thing he does to Marnie goes basically unsaid by the end of the film doesn't rub me the right way. Speaking of Marnie, Hendren gives a great performance and sells her broken character, Connery does a good job, but his fake American accent isn't good in the slightest. As a whole, I'm sure I'll forget this film in a few weeks, the 60s were a time for Hitchcock when he was out of his prime.

7/30/24 "Good Neighbor Sam" 1964

I feel like this was a hard film to rank. There are some really good aspects, as well as some really bad moments. This film follows Sam Bissell (Jack Lemmon), an advertiser who lives a pretty cookie-cutter life with his full family. Things change, however, when his wife's old friend comes into town, and things get turned on their head. The friend is going through a divorce and is set to get an inheritance of 15 million dollars, but she needs to still be married to get the money. That's where Sam comes in, he pretends to be her husband (since none of her family has met her husband). Things get even more complicated when his boss (Edward G. Robinson), meets him with his false wife and thinks they're actually married. There are some funny gags, but the film goes for a sillier lens with goofy sound effects and strange Rube Goldberg machines. The actors do a great job, (especially Jack Lemmon, but I might be biased because I love his work), but the writing could be a little weak and the editing is even weaker.

5/7/25 "The Gospel According to Matthew" 1964

I don't really get why so many people seem to like this movie; it seems very slow and doesn't really do the gospel story justice. I felt like the story was cut up in a way that wasn't really that interesting, nor did it let us know a lot about the disciples or even Jesus. I mean, the disciples all had previous lives where they weren't the best people, until Jesus came along and changed them; that's really interesting, but I feel like this film didn't really do that. Overall, this was kind of a dud, in my opinion.

6/10/24 "A Fistful Of Dollars" 1964

For the longest time, I had only seen the film "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", I hadn't seen the full trilogy. Apparently, there are two films before the iconic "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". Watching this film, I can see how this changed the Western genre. It's directed perfectly and has a really strong story. There's a reason why Clint Eastwood is such a household name, he gives such an incredible performance in this film and solidifies his iconic persona. I really enjoyed this film and would suggest the full trilogy.

7/14/25 "Fail-Safe" 1964
8/10 Stars, Favorite Quote: "Those who can survive are the only ones worth surviving." Do they say the title of the movie within the movie: Yes'If I had a nickel for every film dealing with nuclear war that was released in 1964, I'd have two nickels. It's so interesting to see the parallels between this film and "Dr. Strangelove" as they handle the subject matter in such different ways. Dr. Strangelove uses comedy and satire to get through its heavy subject matter and point out the absurdity of the situation. Fail-Safe is a full moral panic as the film gets more philosophical with what it means to survive and debating if the ends are worth the means. This film is very similar to Lumet's other Henry Fonda film, "12 Angry Men", where the film dives deep into morality. The film is shot very well with a lot of shadows over the main characters as they argue about the bomb.

6/26/22 "Send Me No Flowers" 1964
2/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "I forgive you!"
This was one of the biggest disappointments for me. I watched this film because it was the last in a weird trilogy of movies where Doris Day and Rock Hudson fell in love with each other through a misunderstanding and hilarity ensues. These films are "Pillow Talk", "Lover Come Back", and this one. This movie didn't make me laugh once, not even a nose exhale. They tried to make the movie QuIrKieR by constantly Mickey Mousing what's happening on-screen with the score. It feels extremely cartoonish and not in a funny way, more in a cringey "They were trying way too hard" way. This was the only one of these three movies to use a pre-existing story the play of the same name. This film's writing is also pretty abysmal, there are way too many misunderstandings to make this funny. The smart humor of the previous two is replaced by weirdly sexist jokes that seem to come out of nowhere. The whole thing was just such a sad end to these movies since I really liked these three actors being together. "Pillow Talk" and "Lover Come Back" were (what I would consider) the final gasp of air for the Screwball Comedy.

1/20/23 "My Fair Lady" 1964

This is a great musical! The songs are fantastic and it's actually really funny. It's weird that they didn't cut a single song from the original play since that's what they normally do. It's hard to believe this won the Oscar for best picture since it feels like too happy of a movie. They change the ending though which kind of ruins the film in my opinion. I feel like this is a great film, but Dr. Strangelove deserved the win.

8/17/25 "The Americanization of Emily" 1964

It's a shame that this film wasn't funnier than it was. This film always gets referenced as a great comedy, but unfortunately, I didn't find it as funny. It had some great cinematography and some good performances, although I didn't really see the chemistry between Julie Andrews and James Garner; they just don't seem like a couple, which is weird because they would work a lot better a few years later in "Victor/Victoria". As a whole, this is a pretty forgettable film.

9/19/24 "Onibaba" 1964

This is a staple of Japanese horror, but I thought it was just alright. The lighting was really well done and popped with the black-and-white visuals. Speaking of visuals, the designs of the masks and the horror make-up were really well done as well, I just wasn't a fan of the story. We follow a woman and her daughter who kill samurais while the mother's son is at war. Her daughter starts an affair with the neighbor, so she tries to scare her away. The story is sort of barebones and not a lot comes from it, but there are some great horror moments throughout.

10/24/24 "Father Goose" 1964

It's odd to me that this won Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. I mean, there were some funny moments here and there, but this just seems so forgettable and forced. This is one of the last films of Cary Grant, but this time he actually acts his age. Many of his films from the '60s show him acting like he's still in his 30s. This film follows a cranky ship captain who's tasked to watch over planes on a remote island during WW2, he only does it to drink alcohol. While on the island, he finds that there's a school teacher there (Leslie Caron) with her students. He's very brash while she is very controlled. It's a classic set up that doesn't reinvent the wheel. I believe "A Hard Day's Night" should've won.

7/9/23 "Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte" 1964

This is the "Lover Come Back" to "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane"'s "Pillow Talk". Joan Crawford was initially brought in to do this movie, but after she got pneumonia, she got replaced by Olivia De Havilland. This was a very slow, predictable movie that had some great moments. The dream sequence was amazing and the effect held up well! The story was very predictable though, it felt like they took aspects from several other movies of the time and put them in a blender to make this. I can see how this is a big inspiration to other films, but I didn't think it was that amazing.

8/13/24 "Kiss Me, Stupid" 1964

This was a pretty great Wilder outing. It's about a musician named Dino (Dean Martin) who's on his way to do a big television show, but he stops for gas in a small town. The people (Ray Waltson and Cliff Osmond) who run the gas station, however, are songwriters, so they sabotage his car so he can stay the night and possibly take one of his songs. The problem is, Dino needs to have sex every night in order to avoid a headache. This is a problem because Waltson's wife is a huge Dino fan, so he gets in a fake fight with her, so she can leave. He gets a waitress at a local restaurant (Kim Novak) to pretend to be his wife, so Dino can stay. This has a great premise that's pretty well acted. Ray Waltson does a great job, but at certain points, it feels like he's doing a Jack Lemmon impersonation (the role was written for Lemmon). The same goes for Kim Novak who slips into a Marilyn Monroe voice (who died the year the script was finished). People really didn't like this for the time because of how sexual it was, but today these aspects are almost not noticeable. Pretty underrated.

6/15/25 "Kwaidan" 1965

I feel like the visuals of this film far outweigh the story. This film is an anthology of four folk stories from Japan. The colors in this film are very intense and well done; however, I feel as though the stories could've been stronger. The film runs for 3 hours, which makes this film a slow watch. It also didn't really have all too many frights throughout.

3/6/25 "Alphaville" 1965

This is an interesting mix of genres. It's a science fiction, new-wave, noir film. We follow Lemmy Caution as he tries to find and kill the creator of the supercomputer that runs Alphaville and keeps people in line. Throughout the film, he also tries to teach the computer what emotions are to rival the horrors it's causing. The film was directed by Godard, and I was sort of expecting more out of it. Some of the editing was interesting (like when they would invert the colors), but it just doesn't live up to Breathless in my opinion.

9/18/23 "Repulsion" 1965

Roman Polanski's first English film. It had some great visuals, but the story was far too dull and plain. The whole story is about a woman who has a fear of intimacy (androphobia) who gets left alone when her sister and her sister's husband leave for Rome. The whole movie is just her being depressed and seeing visions of horrible things. The creepiest part of this movie is how it adds to the fact that in almost all of Roman Polanski's films, there's an instance of sexual assault. This is upsetting when you know that he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl. I can't really call this one a classic.

9/23/25 "What's New Pussycat" 1965

You can kind of tell this was Woody Allen's first script. It's not that it's bad; it's just a bit all over the place. This film is a screwball comedy where we follow a ladies' man (Peter O'Toole) who's supposed to be getting married to his girlfriend soon, but can't settle down, so he meets with a German psychiatrist (Peter Sellers) to help him. The only problem is that the psychiatrist is going through similar relationship problems. It's interesting, because originally the movie was written with Warren Beatty in mind for the lead (with the script being based on his bachelor lifestyle) and Groucho Marx as the Psychiatrist. This is heavily influenced by the sexual revolution of the 1960s, but there are still some great moments.

2/21/25 "Cat Ballou" 1965

It's odd that this film is both a satire of the western genre as well as an actual western. This causes a real big tone problem. For instance, there would be a serious scene that happens and then it would cut to our two narrators (Stubby Kaye and Nat King Cole) singing a semi-silly song about it, which just ruins the mood. I liked the sillier aspects of the film, when it didn't take itself too seriously, it's just a shame that the whole film wasn't like that. It's insane to me that this is an oscar-winning movie for best actor.

4/21/24 "The Great Race" 1965

This is a wild film to experience, it's a three-hour-long comedy that has the ambition of Lawrence of Arabia with the writing of Looney Tunes. It's about two rivaling stuntmen, Leslie the Great (Tony Curtis) who dresses all in white and is our good guy, and Professor Fate (Jack Lemmon), an over-the-top villain who dresses in all black and has a twirly mustache (he was the inspiration behind Dick Dastardly). These two get in a giant race from New York to Paris, Fate brings his sidekick Max (Peter Falk), and a third party joins the race, the determined Maggie Dubois (Natalie Wood) who wants to join the race to report on it. It's three hours of various set pieces and expensive props that can lead to funny scenes. Most of the time, however, these set pieces feel more like quantity over quality. My friends and I watched this at a double feature of this and "Some Like It Hot" and this felt like it was compensating more. "Some Like It Hot" didn't need a huge budget or three hours, it had the perfect length to be one of the funniest movies ever written, whereas this film feels like it needed various crutches. Some of the scenes are really funny and make this film worth it, but the rest of it can be a little too much.

12/19/24 "Darling" 1965

This is a pretty alright British New Wave film. We follow Diana Scott (Julie Christie), an actress/model who's starting to get on track to become famous. We follow her various relationships with different men as she gets more popular. There isn't a lot of plot, but the characters really carry this one. I can see why this won best screenplay, there are a lot of interesting turns in this one that keeps it interesting.

7/14/22 "Help!" 1965
6/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "They have to paint me red before they chop me. It's a different religion than ours...I think."
This is a weird movie, but I feel like it leans into it pretty well. This is like Magical Mystery Tour if it had a more defined plot and a lot more humor. I love how the subtitles would add nothing to the movie except being there for pure laughs. One example is a subtitle coming up to explain to us that the animal on screen is a tiger when we can clearly see that. Also, in the end, it says how the film was dedicated to Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine which is such an odd dedication that really adds a lot to this film. This is an action/adventure/comedy/musical, and everyone knew how ridiculous the film was so they had fun with it and you can really say that. You can tell which lines were improved, like the scene when a bomb was pushed into a curling match and George yells "Hey, it's a thingy! A fiendish thingy!". It's also funny because this movie uses a lot of sitars, which inspired George Harrison to use it in Beatles tracks because the very next album they would make would be "Rubber Soul" which has a lot of Eastern influence. This is a goofy fun time and I'm all for that.

6/10/24 "For A Few More Dollars" 1965

A lot of people would rank this as the second-best of the trilogy, but I would say this is the weakest link of the three movies. This doesn't mean in any way that this is a bad movie, it's just the weakest one. I really enjoyed the way Sergio Leone treats the camera. The addition of Lee Van Cleef was a genius choice, he is the perfect addition to the Leone films. I loved the running gag where his bounty just gets bigger and bigger as the film goes on. It doesn't exactly have the greatest story, but it's still an enjoyable time with some breathtaking shots.

11/19/23 "The Ghost And Mr. Chicken" 1966

This was a pretty fun film! It's a little all over the place and could get pretty over-the-top wacky (especially the karate bits), but it has a lot of heart. It's about the town loser Luther Heggs (Don Knotts) reporting on a supposedly haunted house in order to help his struggling newspaper. While there, he finds out it's actually haunted and becomes a town celebrity. Don Knotts gives such an amazing performance in this film, he really makes you feel for Luther. Luther is just a very nervous guy who just wants some respect. The romance between him and his crush feels forced, but it's still pretty sweet. As a whole this is a fun, campy comedy movie that has aged pretty well.

5/1/24 "Black Girl" 1966 6/10 Stars, Favorite Quote: "Never again will the mistress scold me" Do they say the title of the movie within the movie: No
This was a pretty interesting film! It's considered to be the first Sub-Saharan African film to receive an international audience. It's about a woman who grew up in an African village moving to France to escape poverty, only to discover that France is just as miserable as her hometown. It has some biting commentary on racism and colonialism that it does quite well. I don't really have a lot to say about this film, it's just a pretty solid film.

12/20/24 "A Man and A Woman" 1966
6/10 Stars, Favorite Quote: "Some Sundays start well and end badly. It's hard to believe- It's crazy to refuse happiness." Do they say the title of the movie within the movie: Yes
This was a highly revered foreign film that I thought was pretty good. I don't really have too much to say about this movie. It follows two widows as they both start to fall in love with each other, but are held back by their grief. It's a really smart concept and the lead characters are really interesting, but it was very slow and the payoff wasn't worth the whole film. The score is really great, but other than that, it's not memorable to me.

10/2/23 "Seconds" 1966

I feel like this is sort of an overrated horror film. It follows an older man, who's not satisfied with his being led into a factory, where he has the chance to fake his death and get surgery to be a completely different person to get a second chance at life. It's an interesting premise, but I don't think they really do it that well. The shots and the editing are great, and some of the performances are great, but the plot drags a lot until the last 10 minutes

Mike Nichols' first film and it's incredible. It's about an old couple inviting over a young couple just to play mental games with them the whole time and reveal how broken their marriage is. This movie gets ruined because it inspired the Dinner Party episode of The Office which a lot of people will think this is exactly like. I don't want to give too much away, but it's a gripping story throughout. Although, every time they sing "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf", they sing it to the tune of "The Wheels of The Bus" instead of "Who's Afraid of The Big Bad Wolf", which deducted two stars (just kidding)

This was such a campy, fun heist movie. We follow the daughter of an art forger (Audrey Hepburn), who realizes that her father's false statue is going to get found out at the art museum, unless she can stop it. One night, she gets robbed by a cunning cat-burglar (Peter O'Toole), so she asks for his help with this heist. The chemistry between Hepburn and O'Toole is really well done, and the movie has pretty great stakes. This movie is always entertaining and is pretty well directed by the legendary William Wyler.

2/21/24 "Torn Curtain" 1966

This has some great thrills with some absolutely abysmal chemistry. It's a woman (Julie Andrews) finding out that her fiancee (Paul Newman) is working with the Soviets during the Cold War. However, we learn that Newman is a double agent for America just getting information. While they're in East Germany, his cover gets blown and they must find a way to get out of there. This film gives us some classic Hitchcock thrills, especially with the bus scene. The problem with the film comes from the lackluster characters. This feels like we're watching a Julie Andrews movie spliced together with a Paul Newman film rather than them feeling like a couple. They just don't bounce off each other at all. This isn't the most innovative Hitchcock film, but it still has some thrills in there.

6/24/23 "The Fortune Cookie" 1966

Another Wilder film, but this one is pretty important. This is the first film that Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau worked together, and you can see the magical chemistry instantly. The film is about a cameraman (Lemmon) getting hit by a football while filming a sports game and getting mild injuries. His sleazy brother-in-law (Matthau) is a lawyer and overexaggerates his injuries to try to sue the insurance industry for a large sum of money. He goes all the way and puts Lemmon in a wheelchair and neck brace in order to sell it. The whole film is about seeing how far Lemmon would go to try to win the money. It's a funny plot, but it goes on a little too long. It didn't really need to be two hours and ten minutes. Some of the characters feel a little undercooked, but as a whole this was a good movie with a great script

4/09/25 "Closely Observed Trains" 1966

This film feels a lot more modern than I thought it would. We follow an apprentice train watcher, Milo who's living through the second world war. Everyone around him is really stressed about the war and the world around them, but Milo is oblivious to the whole thing. His mind is set on having sex with a girl his age. Though his heart is set on a woman who's also a train watcher, he has no luck with her and instead starts dating a resistance fighter who recruits him to the cause. It's a pretty funny movie that has some good drama to it as well. It reminds me of an indie movie that would be made today.

1/9/23 "A Man For All Seasons" 1966

Wait... you guys have never heard of this movie??? How? This won the Oscar for best picture in 1966, meaning that people seriously thought this was a better movie than Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. This film has absolutely no place in film history. It's so bland and boring with a very unmemorable story and an almost unmemorable cast. Orson Welles is in this movie... for 5 minutes and yet he still gets fourth billing. Robert Shaw did an alright job as the king, but the rest of the actors gave nothing. Fred Zinneman (the director of this movie) called it his easiest film which really shows. There are no artistic choices here, just shots because we need shots. This deserves to be forgotten.

This was a fairly enjoyable movie. I really liked the story and the film's atmosphere, but I went into it expecting the wrong thing. I went into this film thinking it would be a Hitchcockian thriller, but it's more like an Italian Neo-Realism film. This film is aggressively '60s, at some points, it starts feeling like a time capsule. The Yardbirds make an appearance with Jimmy Page playing guitar. This film is about a young photographer who accidentally takes a picture of a murder and he studies it to try to see what happened. If you watch just expect a regular new-wave film and not a big thriller

5/3/23 "A Countess From Hong Kong" 1967

The last Charlie Chaplin film, and his worst one. First of all, Chaplin only makes a brief cameo, this is a Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren film. These two have absolutely no chemistry together and just end up feeling awkward together. One letterboxd review puts it best when they say that this movie is just people walking in and out of rooms. Once you notice this, you can never look at it the same way again. The comedy isn't really that good either since it's Brando trying to act chaplinish but failing. This film also came out in 1967, which makes this film seem dated for the time. 1967 was the year of The Graduate, The Producers, Bonnie and Clyde, Sgt. Pepper's, The Velvet Underground, Are You Experienced? The Doors, Pipers at the Gate of Dawn, etc. Those times were clearly a-changing and a comedy like this just wasn't a part of this new Hollywood. It's interesting how Chaplin can create some of the best films of all time and also some of the weakest films

12/17/25 "Jack And The Beanstalk" 1967

I wasn't sure whether this counted for a review, since it was just a TV special, but after watching it, I feel like I have to review it due to how odd it was. This film was a collaboration between Gene Kelly and Hanna-Barbera for NBC, with some pretty catchy songs by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen. It's interesting because this film was an animation-live action hybrid film using a lot of green screen and clever set design. There are two major points of interest in this film for me that sort of hold it back from being great.
First of all, this would've worked as a film a lot better in my opinion. Only having about 50 minutes to tell this story makes it feel a bit rushed. The special is banking on your previous knowledge of the fairytale to fill in certain parts as they rush through the story. Also, if it were a film, the budget would be a lot higher. This project is very ambitious, but I don't think a 60s television budget could've made it fully realized. I just don't really think the Hanna-Barbera, limited animation style really works alongside real actors due to how choppy and geometric the style is. The giant looks and moves like a Flintstone side character. Seeing the animated characters try to match the fluidity of Gene Kelly's movements is funny to me.
Speaking of Gene Kelly, this special seems like a vanity project more than anything. I love Gene Kelly, but there was a lot of Gene Kelly to go around. Heck, there's more Gene Kelly than Jack (the main character). Kelly plays the merchant who sells Jack the beans named Jeremy. In a normal tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, that would be it for Jeremy, but instead, Jeremy acts more like a self-insert character who inexplicably follows Jack up the beanstalk and joins him for the adventure. On said adventure, every woman he meets falls in love with him, and he even is the one who cuts down the beanstalk. This leaves Jack as a pretty flat and uninteresting character. This is probably just what the director wanted, though... the director being Gene Kelly himself.
As a whole, if this had a bigger budget and runtime and maybe even a different director, I could see this film doing well. It has charm and great ideas, just done in a less-than-great way.

11/6/24 "The Young Girls of Rochefort" 1967

This is one of the most beautifully shot films I've seen in a while. The movie is filmed with long shots that show the beautiful city of Rochefort, France. There would be shots filmed down the street that goes on continuously for 3 minutes as dancers came flipping by. The songs are absolutely wonderful, although a lot of the songs end up feeling a little samey lyrically, but the music itself is incredible. We follow two twins from Rochefort who both dream of finding love in their life, but little do they know, both of the men they were looking for are in Rochefort. The problem is, they keep just missing each other and things get more complicated when they add more characters to the mix with their own love. The writing is really funny and the choreography really fits the film. It can drag in a few places, but it's a really great musical, and I can understand why so many people love it so much.

4/23/24 "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" 1967

I was shocked at how funny this film was. I wasn't expecting the writing to be as tight as it was. It's about a young window cleaner named Finch (Robert Morse) trying to climb the business ladder by taking the advice of the book "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying". It's funny how morally questionable the book is. It's also really funny seeing how he's able to easily manipulate people, like the big boss Biggley (Rudy Vallee). I also love how the secretary, Rosemary falls head over heels for Finch, despite him not showing the same interest. The songs are really catchy and memorable (especially "Brotherhood of Man") and without spoilers, the TV moment is one of the funniest scenes I've seen in a musical. I would highly recommend this musical, it really holds up.

6/9/23 "Thoroughly Modern Millie" 1967

One of the silliest musicals I've ever seen. I'm used to the stage version I saw nearly 8 years ago, which was a lot more grounded, but this has a charm to it. They have these charming moments when Millie looks directly into the camera and they put up a text box of what she's thinking like an old silent movie. Carol Channing's character is one of the most chaotic characters I have seen on the screen, but that's just perfect. Her introduction is her chasing down the main three in a plane and she tries to pass them and then she just turns to them and randomly says "RASPBERRY!". That becomes almost funnier when you know that in the script it actually says that her character GIVES a raspberry, like with your tongue, but she just didn't know what that was. The end result was so funny that they just kept it in. Some of the story aspects don't exactly age well, but the songs are great. It's crazy how many of those songs were in the back of my mind that I completely forgot about from those eight years. The director of this film would later go on to direct "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "The Sting", and his most commercially and critically acclaimed work, "Funny Farm"

9/28/25 "Casino Royale" 1967

It's so rough to describe this movie because of what a mess it is, but there were some things I surprisingly liked about it. The film is a James Bond parody where the original James Bond (David Niven) gets called out of retirement to fight the evil SMERSH. To confuse the other side, every agent on the team gets renamed to James Bond, including Evelyn Tremble (Peter Sellers). We even see James Bond's nephew, Jimmy Bond (Woody Allen). This film is obviously trying to capture the hype of "What's New Pussycat". There are two references to the movie, but they were pretty funny. This film was directed by 5 different people, and as it goes on, it becomes more bizarre and incomprehensible. There are these grand sequences that come out of nowhere, especially when the evil Le Chiffre (played by Orson Welles of all people) uses a brain-torturing device on James Bond, and it becomes an avant-garde film. As a whole, I can see why the Bond community hates this film. I feel like Austin Powers just does this concept ten times better.

8/8/25 "Two For The Road" 1967

I feel like this movie was ahead of its time when depicting romance. This film uses a lot of flashbacks and edits to portray how a couple's marriage has gone downhill (that couple being Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney). The leads have such great chemistry with each other and really sell that they're in a relationship. The film can be a little annoying with the edits, but it really tells a good story.

11/7/25 "Barefoot In The Park" 1967

Neil Simon may be one of the most gifted writers. His writing style leaves room for so many great jokes and characters. Barefoot In The Park, arguably one of his most famous works behind The Odd Couple, follows a newlywed couple who turn out to be very different. Corie (Jane Fonda) is a very out-there and adventurous person, while Paul (Robert Redford) is a shyer, more level-headed person. We see this conflict expand when Corie tries to set up her mother (Mildred Natwick) with their peculiar upstairs neighbor, Mr. Velasco (Charles Boyer). These four give great performances in their respective roles, and none of them are annoying. In these types of stories, normally one side is portrayed as annoying and wrong, but both sides are pretty rational in their judgments. As a whole, this is a very fun work that adapts to the screen really well.

5/27/25 "Hombre" 1967

This was a very standard new-age western, it didn't really offer much new. This follows a man (Paul Newman) who Native Americans raised, so everyone puts him down for that, but when trouble arises, he's the one man to save the day. The film was slow and felt exactly like all the other revisionist westerns at the time. It was a treat to see Fredric March in this film, because he's a very underrated actor of classic hollywood, but other than that, this film fell sort of flat.

1/23/23 "Don't Look Back" 1967

One of the first Rockumentaries and they couldn't have picked a better person. Bob Dylan is such an interesting guy, and seeing this film really made me see how he acted behind the scenes. He would constantly get into arguments with the press and he would get very philosophical and existential. He would get a little disrespectful, but for the most part, he respected the other people's arguments. We didn't really see a lot of the concert, which is a shame since it was his last acoustic concert, but it was still pretty interesting

12/14/22 "In The Heat Of The Night" 1967

This not only won the Oscar but was also the first Sidney Poitier movie I've seen. It's such a shame that he died this year. I always knew he was a good actor, but I would've never guessed he was this good. This whole film is such a powerful statement on racism in not only the South but in all of America. My one gripe is how the mystery itself wasn't particularly that interesting, although there were some cool clues. This is such an important film and I completely understand why it won best picture. Although I think "The Graduate" was a better film, this film needed to win and be seen at the time, and even now

2/7/22 "Bonnie And Clyde" 1967
6/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "STEP ON IT VELMA!!!!"
This was a really interesting movie that I had to review. I liked the characters in this movie and I liked the story, it's just the pacing for me. I know I say this a lot, but I really mean it this time when I say that this is a SLOW movie. It's a French New Wave film, meaning that the characters are more important than the story. It's a very existential movie, but some scenes I couldn't help but laugh at. The whole movie is about Bonnie, Clyde, and the rest of their gang robbing banks, but they're horrible at robbing banks. They several mistakes that anyone would reasonably not do, like parking the getaway car or robbing a bank that doesn't have any money in it. It's weird, because this movie had Gene Wilder in it for 5 minutes, but made those 5 minutes golden and hilarious. This film is a great piece of film history and I understand why we still watch it today, but it's just so-so.

This was pretty abstract and hard to follow at times, but a pretty good movie! It's about a man trying to get revenge against someone who wronged him in the past. He soon finds out that the man who wronged him is in a criminal organization. As he tracks him down, he goes deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole. This movie had some great shots and direction. The story was a little all over the place, but it definitely feels ahead of its time.

10/10/25 "Camelot" 1967

I feel like this musical adaptation often gets overlooked, which is a shame, because it's quite good. It's based on the 1960 Lerner and Loewe musical, which is based on the story of King Arthur. This musical is quite interesting because it follows the love triangle between King Arthur, Guenevere, and Lancelot. The songs are really beautiful and add a lot of character to these figures. It's also shot quite well, being in a beautiful castle setting. While the cast in this doesn't exactly measure up to the iconic original Broadway cast of Richard Burton, Julie Andrews, and Robert Goulet, the cast in this film does a pretty good job. I like Richard Harris' performance; he has this quiet timber that really is interesting, but could get in the way of his singing. As a whole, it's a well-written musical that's better on broadway.

6/30/22 "Le Samourai" 1967

This is now one of my favorite French new wave films (behind 400 Blows of course). This film has this sense of absurdity about this man's job, being an assassin and him killing people seemingly randomly. He doesn't have any reason to take these people's lives besides making money from it. The existentialism from the French new wave movies stems from WW2 and how people believed that life is absurd. I don't have a lot to say about this one it was a pretty solid film, better than The Red Circle

8/4/25 "Wait Until Dark" 1967

I feel like the influence of this film can be seen all over, but the film itself wasn't that great. We follow a blind woman (Audrey Hepburn) as she accidentally gets a doll that has heroin in it. Little does she know that three burglars are after it, too, so they try to steal it from her. It's a pretty interesting concept, but it just wasn't thrilling enough to be as interesting. Audrey Hepburn does a pretty good job playing a blind woman, but this is far from her best performance.

5/21/23 "Cool Hand Luke" 1967

Feels like a mix of "The Great Escape" and "I Am a Fugitive From Chain Gang". Let's start with the good! Paul Newman is great in this film! He puts a lot into the character and makes you really feel for the predicament he's in. This film has great cinematography with very inventive shots like the sunglasses shot. My problem comes with the story, I like how it focuses on Luke, but sometimes it gets really slow in some points and has some unnecessary scenes (especially the egg scene) and after a while, it gets sort of repetitive. I can see how this was a big deal, but there are better films from this time.

5/31/22 "The Producers" 1967

7/10 Stars, This was the first Mel Brooks-directed movie and it's funny because of how similar it is to his other films and how different it is. It's similar because it has his charming and witty writing with outlandish situations, but it's very different from his other films because of how grounded it is compared to his more satirical spoofs (Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Space-balls, etc.). The premise for this is genius, it's about a failing producer and his neurotic accountant (who's played by the incomparable Gene Wilder) realizing that they could make more money making a Broadway flop than a smashing success. If they had people supporting the show by giving it money and it fails, they keep the money while the supporters only get a minuscule amount. So the two desperately try to make the worst show they can make so they can fail horribly. I saw the 2005 remake first, so I know all the twists and turns but this was still great. I would say I preferred the way Nathan Lane, Will Ferrall, and Uma Thurman played their roles in the remake, but I feel like this one is better. Gene Wilder gives 110% and in the new one, they changed the beatnik way that Dick Shawn played his character with the overly flamboyant Roger. I prefer the Dick Shawn one but I can understand how it would clash with the modern day since it's extremely 60's. I can see how people still come back to this movie to this day

10/2/24 "Viy" 1967

This was a delightfully odd film that comes from Russia. It follows a young priest in Russia who has the duty of watching over the corpse of a woman who might get possessed into becoming an evil spirit. He protects the dead body from every monster that comes its way. At first, the film was sort of slow, but those insane last couple of minutes really made it up. The effects and atmosphere are really great with some inspired creature design and tone. Overall, I would say this is a classic film that I'd recommend (if you like weird films).

11/30/25 "Doctor Dolittle" 1967

It's pretty obvious how behind the times this movie was. This film came out in a pivotal year of film history. 1967 was the start of "New Hollywood," and we could see that in the fellow nominees (yes, this was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars). We saw an existential clash in generations in "The Graduate." The bloody price of crime in "Bonnie and Clyde." And the issues of systemic racism in both "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" and "In The Heat Of The Night". So, what do we have here? A man who could talk to animals. This musical follows the story of Doctor Dolittle, who is a veterinarian who can speak to the animals and treats them like people. For being a musical, the songs are sure awful. This was meant to be a Lerner and Loewe musical, but both declined, so they wrote it sort of in that style. This is far from the charm of My Fair Lady or Brigadoon, however. This won "Best Song," however, which is laughable because all of them have no melody due to the limited singing of Rex Harrison (Dr. Dolittle himself). This was a problem in My Fair Lady, but that style of speak-singing fit Professor Higgins, while here it just feels out of place. Especially when compared with "The Bare Necessities" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie", it sticks out like a sore thumb. This film was an unfortunate nail in the golden-age musical coffin.

6/17/23 "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" 1967

It's crazy how many films used this as their plot but just made a worse version of it. This film is great with some incredible acting from not only the big three (Hepburn, Tracy, and Poitier) but also the supporting cast. The movie was pretty well paced, except for slowing down a lot towards the end and it's sort of anticlimactic how it wraps up, but this deserves to win best original screenplay. I can understand how this film is such a huge film for its time (and even now). It's no coincidence how many rip-offs of this film don't have the same meaning or message to them. This did it the best

7/5/23 "Playtime" 1967

6/10 Stars, Often regarded as Tati's film, I personally don't think it is. The film is his most artistic but lacks a plot and drags a bit. In this film, Monsieur Hulot is more of a side character which is a shame because his scenes are the best. The whole story is just about Monsieur Hulot and a tourist getting lost in Paris, which is supposed to represent how Monsieur Hulot can't recognize the city he lives in because of all the changes made to make it more business efficient. This film uses a lot of greys to show the office buildings, and speaking of those office buildings, the sets are amazing in this film. Tati really made sure that the film was aesthetically pleasing. I can understand why people would say this is his best film, but personally "Mon Oncle" is the better film since it hits the same narrative beats in a more continuous story with sweeter moments

7/12/24 "In Cold Blood" 1967

This was shot really masterfully. This film is mainly lauded for its cinematography, which is rightfully so. One of this film's most iconic shots comes from a window's sheer brilliance. One of the main characters, Perry (Robert Blake), is talking about his past as he stands by a window. He's obviously hurt, but he's too tough to cry. The window, however, is reflecting raindrops that look like tears, making it look like he's crying. It's such a wonderful shot that is the movie's best part. The plot is pretty great as well, we follow two robbers as they try to rob a very rich family when they go to the house, however, there's no money there and they end up killing the family. The rest of the movie follows them running away from the police as they discuss the moral implications of their actions. It's a stand-out film from this time and a clear bridge between the classic Noirs of old Hollywood with the character-focused plot of the new wave.

11/12/24 "The Firemen's Ball" 1967

This was such a silly movie. We follow the titular Firemen's ball to honor a retiring fireman, the problem is, everything goes wrong. The whole town is there, but not one of them signed up for the beauty pageant, so the firemen have to go through the party and taking people to join the pageant. These firemen are clearly stupid and don't know how to do anything. There's a raffle that's supposed to be going on, but as the night goes on, people notice more and more of the prizes are getting stolen out of midair. This was one of the first hits of Milos Foreman who would go on to do One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus, so it's funny seeing such a silly film from him.

2/10 Stars, What? What did I just watch? I was so excited to see this movie since the American version of the album is one of my favorites of all time, but the movie was just nonsense. The whole movie was improvised by the fab four themselves, so the plot is little to nonexistent. It's one long drug trip with some excellent Beatles songs. They would have long segments that just dragged on, like a marathon that turned into "Wacky Races". The songs are shot perfectly though, they feel like modern MTV music videos, also whenever there's background music, it's always remixed classic Beatles songs from their 1963-1966 era. Nothing can beat the iconic segment of "Your Mother Should Know" where the four Beatles elegantly walk down a long, swirling staircase in matching white suits. My advice, listen to the soundtrack located in the link below and stay far away from this film unless you're a big Beatles fan

10/10 Stars, Wow was this an incredible film? It's such a simple premise but executed perfectly. It was shot so perfectly, shout out to the Scuba suit scene and the ending. Also, the casting was great. Though Dustin Hoffman looked a little older than his character was, he acted exactly like that age. He's so naive and awkward that he pulls it off. The somber nature of this movie is really powerful, so getting Simon and Garfunkel to do the music was genius. A must-see.

7/10 Stars, The Odd Couple started the classic sitcom duo (the messy one and the neat freak). This movie is an adaptation of the Neil Simon play. This is a wonderful adaptation that was cast perfectly. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are the perfect fit for Felix and Oscar. They really match their on-screen characters and add so much to them. It also helps when Neil Simon wrote the dialogue brilliantly, there were so many callbacks and references to previous events that it really does feel like a sitcom. Very solid movie

10/24/24 "I Was Nineteen" 1968

This was a pretty boring movie, all things considered, I wished it was a lot better. This was a German war movie about the soldiers during the last days of WW2. We follow a young Soldier who's, you guessed it, 19. It's just very slow and hard to follow, which was pretty disappointing. I was really a fan of the characters, but it was shot pretty well, except for the occasional shakey camera. It just wasn't my cup of Tea.

12/7/24 "Planet Of The Apes" 1968

Going into this film, I thought I knew most of what was going to happen. Throughout my life, I've had a lot spoiled to me, but this film had a lot more. It's a classic premise where four astronauts leave Earth in the year 1972, and while they're away, they travel so fast that time slows down for them. So 2,000 years later (for them, a couple of months), they land on a remote planet where they find that Apes are in charge and humans are treated like wild beasts. Charlton Heston does such a great job in the role and really sells his desperation and the make-up for the chimps is incredibly well done, but easily the best part is the screenplay. Rod Serling's writing can very clearly be seen in the film, and really enhance it. It feels like an extended episode of the Twilight Zone. It's clear why it's a classic.

I wasn't really a big fan of this one. This is Ingmar Bergman's attempt at horror, but I just couldn't really get into it. It's about an artist moving to an island with his wife as he slowly loses his mind. The horror I found was a little too little and far between. The imagery was pretty alright, but I just found myself bored throughout.

10/8/22 "Kuroneko" 1968

This film was pretty interesting. This was my first J-horror movie and I liked the style of the movie. It's about a mom and her daughter-in-law getting killed by a samurai, but a mysterious black cat (Kuroneko in Japanese) licks their bodies causing them to come back as Yo-kai (ghosts) but with cat-like qualities where they swore to kill every samurai. It's a really cool premise, plus this movie has some great special effects and shots, it's just the pacing. The beginning and end of the movie are really good, it's just the middle section that drags. It gets a little repetitive with how many people they kill back to back the same way. Overall, this was a pretty good movie that aged exceptionally well

2/5/22 "2001: A Space Odyssey" 1968

I thought I was gonna hate this movie. I saw the first and last scene in a film class and thought it was just random scenes with no plot, but it turns out there is one! Basically, there are these things called monoliths that have been showing up since the dawn of time, but they were just discovered in the distant year of 2001 (it was the sixties, it was the future), two men are sent out on a mission with their trusty robot pal HAL-9000 with 4 cryogenically frozen scientists. Spoiler Alert: HAL turns evil and tries to kill everyone since they turned on him. HAL's performance in this movie is incredible, it's so frightening how emotionless he is. His death scene is terrifying. Also, the use of sound and silence is great. This movie has an amazing soundtrack and knows when a scene needs music and when it doesn't. The whole movie is also shot ridiculously well, it has that Stanley Kubrick flair of composition and perfection in every shot, also how the effects hold up really well. I'm amazed at how much they could do in the sixties. My one grip is the pacing of the movie is really slow because most of the shots are various establishing shots. Also, I don t entirely get the ending, but I feel like that's the point. Overall, I can see why this film is talked about so much. The science fiction genre will forever be in debt to this movie

This is a very low-budget film, which has its charm but doesn't deserve its 2-hour and 10-minute runtime. It's essentially about a group of married couples who are near the end of their relationship as they argue with each other and that's about it. It would be a really interesting film if it were shorter. There's a clear talent for writing, but it feels strained in such a long scope. It's a landmark film, however, because this led the way for the "New Hollywood" films of the 1970s.

8/11/22 "Rosemary's Baby" 1968
6/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "This is no dream! This is really happening!"
I've got to say, I had higher expectations for this one. Rosemary's Baby is often seen as one of the best horror movies, but I just feel like it's far too slow. Don't get me wrong, there are some great moments in this film, but many of the scenes just drag on. This film has a lot of perverted images, which is common for a Roman Polanski. Polanski wrote and directed this movie and I feel like the screenplay could use a little bit of tweaking. The characters don't really feel real, especially when they talk like Alice from Alice in Wonderland. They explain everything they're doing at the moment so that we can just see or guess what they're saying when Rosemary says "This is no dream! This is really happening!". Nobody would really say this out loud. Overall this is an alright movie, just not the best demon child movie (SHOUT OUT TO OMEN)

7/14/24 "Targets" 1968

This is such an insanely relevant film for our modern times, and it was made 56 years ago. We follow two different stories. It starts with aged horror star, Byron Orlok (Boris Karloff), finishing the latest picture of his when he announces to the director that he is retiring. Everyone is perplexed, so he reasons that the world has become a much scarier place than in any of the movies, there simply isn't a place for Boogeymen in Hollywood. What's neat about this film is they basically replace Boris Karloff's career with Byron Orlok. They show footage of him in films like The Criminal Code and The Terror, but they replace it with his fictional character. While all of this is happening, a young man decides to murder his family and go on a killing spree. There's never really an explanation, it's not like anyone's wronged him, it's just he felt like it. It really feels like a passing-the-torch film from the golden age to the new wave of Hollywood. It's only 90 minutes, and they really know how to use that time to create an engaging story. This is the directorial debut of Peter Bogdanovich, and it's a really great one.

2/12/25 "The Lion In Winter" 1968

I was shocked at how compelling this film was. I was going into it expect it to be a slow film, but it really had my attention. We follow King Henry the second (Peter O'Toole) as he tries to name a successor to the throne. He has three sons who can possibly get the throne, Richard (Anthony Hopkins), Geoffrey (John Castle), and John (Nigel Terry). Troubles come when Henry wants John to be king while his estranged queen (Katharine Hepburn) thinks Richard is a better choice. The conflict of the film comes from the various people who try to sway Henry's decision. The main heart of the film is the strange relationship between Henry and the queen. Peter O'Toole does an incredible job in the role, but Katharine Hepburn is the clear stand out. This film was her third Oscar-win, and it's completely deserved.

7/12/25 "Funny Girl" 1968

It's nice to finally watch this movie. It's one of those musicals that people have recommended for years now. I completely understand the hype behind this musical, especially the score. Jule Styne is an incredible composer, and really makes these songs memorable and catchy. The story is also really well done, with act one being a more standard biopic while act 2 becomes more of a melodrama with the main relationship. This film has a strange history with the Oscars, because it was a part of a tie for Best Actress between this and "The Lion in Winter" with Katharine Hepburn. This movie hinges on Barbara Streisand's performance, and she absolutely nails it. Seeing footage of the real Fanny Brice, she gets the essence of Fanny down. It's much more than an impression, though, because she captures an emotional off-stage persona that lets us know the real Fanny. She is incredible in the role, and I understand why there was a tie for best actress, because both of them give incredible performances.

2/2/23 "Oliver!" 1968

A best picture-winning musical based on the Charles Dickens classic novel directed by the same person who did the Orson Welles thriller "The Third Man". This was the oddest combination but it actually turned out really well. Carol Reed (the director) did such a great job with the shots in this film. It's shot like a heavy noir film, but it's an upbeat musical with some fantastic songs. Also, Ron Moody puts everything into his role as Fagin, he was easily the best part. The problem with this film though is that it was released in 1968, the same year as 2001: A Space Odyssey. While this film was great, it just can't beat 2001.

10/29/24 "Shame" 1968

This just might be my favorite Ingmar Bergman film. We follow a Swedish couple who's marriage is on the rocks. They live on a farm on a small island, away from the world. Things change for the couple when war hits their quiet house. They try to escape war, but it keeps following them everywhere they go. We see as the war worsens, so does the relationship between the two. It's a really heartbreaking story with some extremely sad moments. I think this is stronger than Seventh Seal with a more human story.

8/12/22 "Night of The Living Dead" 1968
8/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "We may not enjoy living together, but dying together isn't going to solve anything."
This was a very impressive one. This is one of the cheapest horror movies ever made but it made its budget back tenfold. This movie cost about 20,000 dollars to make but made back an estimated 30 million. It made 1,500 times the amount it took to make it and honestly, the low budget adds to how great the film is. Since they couldn't spend too much on special effects most of the movie takes place in one house and is more of a character study. Everyone in the house has very different views and ideas and they can't really get along but they have to in order to survive. Honestly, the most intriguing part is the characters inside the house rather than the zombies. Also for being a 60s movie, this pushed the envelope pretty far for what horror can be. Overall this was a trailblazing movie whose influence on the horror genre can easily be seen.

6/20/25 "Barbarella" 1968

This is arguably the most '60s movie of the time. The music, visuals, and overall tone of the film are very psychedelic and countercultural. We follow the adventures of Barbarella (Jane Fonda), who's sent into space to find a scientist. While on her adventure, she meets many strange men who only want one thing out of her. While the story doesn't make a lot of sense, the film is more of a "turn off your mind, relax, and float-upstream" kind of movie where you just let it happen.

3/26/25 "Once Upon A Time In The West" 1968

Man, can Sergio Leone direct the hell out of a movie. This film is beautifully shot and really well-composed. It was a treat to watch how well the action on the screen fits and how gorgeous it all is. The score by Ennio Morricone is as brilliant as ever and really captures the adventure of the movie. All these aspects could've made this film amazing, but it's weighed down by the abysmally slow pace. I like a slow movie, but this was SLOW. The opening of this film is nine minutes at a train station. Is anything really happening? Nope. They're just waiting for a train. It's really well shot, but it is nine minutes of nothing. The film follows suit with some really slow sequences. The film is two hours and forty-five minutes, which isn't a problem, but this film doesn't have enough story to fill two hours and forty-five minutes.

1/16/25 'Monterey Pop" 1968

I've always wanted to see this historic concert. This cemented the psychedelic movement in music and was one of the contributing factors to the "Summer of Love". The artists they got were insane with how talented they were (the clear standouts being The Who, Jimi Hendrix, and Otis Redding). They had these really psychedelic film reels playing in the background of the concert to sell the feel. My one gripe with this film is I wish it was longer. They cut out some acts like The Association and The Byrds and they only played one song per group. I would've loved to have seen more Simon and Garfunkel and Jefferson Airplane, where some of their hits seem like a glaring hole in the setlist. Other than that, this is a really well-packaged time capsule to the greatest time in music (in my humble opinion).

4/22/22 "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid" 1969
8/10 Stars, Favorite Quote "Is it exhausting always being right"
Too many eights this month, but this definitely deserves it. I don't really like Western films. I feel like it's a genre that has so many conventions that too many movies play it too safely. This isn't one of those films. I thought I would know exactly where this story would go, but it really had a lot of twists and turns. It honestly feels like a better "Bonnie and Clyde". The charm of Newman and Redford really makes this movie, if anyone else got these roles it wouldn't have been as good. I like how they play off of each other. The "Raindrops Are Falling On My Head" is so cheesy but it's SO GOOD. I highly suggest this film to film fans who want a different type of Western

9/8/23 "How To Irritate People" 1969

This one special laid out the groundwork for Monty Python. It's weird seeing half the members assemble before the group even forms (John Cleese, Michael Palin, and Graham Chapman). This whole special is about John Cleese teaching the audience how to irritate people through several sketches of the most irritating situations you could get into. It's crazy how well this special flows and the sketches connect in such a special way. They also do a lot with such a simple premise of "situations where people can be irritating" and they really show off how anyone can be irritating. It's weird seeing how most of the sketches would later become retooled into being Monty Python sketches. One of the sketches takes place at an Indian restaurant (which doesn't age well with the Michael Palin character) and it focuses on one of the waiters trying so hard to pretend that he cares about every little thing so he can get a good tip. This would later turn into the classic "dirty fork" sketch. As a whole, these aren't the Python's best sketches, but they're still funny on their own

I just wasn't as wowed by the political thriller as many other people were. I know this is one of the 250 best movies according to Letterboxd, but I just couldn't get into it. We follow the death of a left-leaning politician in a mysterious car crash, as people try to find the truth of the accident to see if it was just that. A lot of the dialogue was pretty dense and just didn't really intrigue me.

7/16/24 "Sweet Charity" 1969
7/10 Stars, Favorite Quote: "She lived hopefully after ever" Do they say the title of the movie within the movie: Yes
I was nervous to see what they would do to a musical about "Nights of Cabiria", the iconic Fellini film about a prostitute trying to find love. This musical, though not as good, really does an admirable adaptation. It's not perfect, but it's pretty close. Instead of a prostitute, however, it's a dancer-for-hire and instead of Italy, it takes place in (then modern) New York City. The songs are really catchy and well-performed (especially the Sammy Davis Jr. number). What I want to highlight most however is the debut of the director Bob Fosse. It's odd seeing this film vs. his next film, Cabaret, and the different choices he makes. This has a lot of quick swipes, zoom-ins, freeze frames, etc. It's a very visually stimulating film, especially some of the lighting choices. He chooses to have very Broadway-like lighting to make it more accurate to the Broadway show. Shirley MacClaine does a really great job portraying this character, and really carries the film. They trade in some of the more dramatic for sillier ones, which are funny, but sort of lose the weight of the film.

10/7/23 "The Cremator" 1969

This is a Czech film that's often listed as one of the best films of all time. I would say this film is pretty good, but not one of the best of all time. It's about a Cremator during WWII who loved his job a little too much. We see him slowly get swayed to becoming a Nazi because the people around him don't give him all the details and have him believe that killing people saves them. It's shot really well, using a lot of fish-eyed lenses to make a dizzying effect. The plot is a little slow and doesn't really have that many horror moments, which was disappointing.

4/10/25 "Salesman" 1969

Such a seemingly random idea for a documentary, but it works really well! We follow four separate Bible salesmen, who are all trying to outsell each other, so we see the rivalry between them. It doesn't have much in the way of plot, being a pure documentary, but you really get to know the salesmen and what they go through. It's pretty unintentionally funny with the way they act, feeling like something out of the office, but it's pretty good!

7/17/23 "Easy Rider" 1969

I feel like this movie didn't age well. It definitely feels like a time capsule of the 1960s. The film is about two counter-culture dudes riding their motorcycles around the country after completing a drug deal. That's it. That's the film! I understand that this was one of the first films to talk about Counter-culture and how people treat them differently because of their long hair and motorcycles, but this wasn't the story to aid this idea. Jack Nicholson is in this movie for a short bit but does a great job. This is one of his first roles and he does a great job. Overall I can see how this movie was a big deal, but nowadays this doesn't hit the same chord

1/11/25 "My Night at Maud's" 1969

This is a very French film. We follow two friends meeting up after a while, only to find that one of them has become a devoted catholic while the other has become a Marxist. The Marxist leads the Catholic to Maud's house, where they discuss a variety of topics dealing with life and religion. The Catholic starts falling in love with Maud, but his religion holds him back from doing anything with her. It's an interesting movie, but pretty slow and all conversation. The characters are nice, but don't really leave a lasting impression.

12/20/22 "Midnight Cowboy" 1969

Another Oscar-winning film and this one is pretty good! It's based on the novel of the same name and it really feels like a novel, I mean that in the best way. It doesn't have too much plot, but the characters and the editing really make this a great film. Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman are excellent in this film and really bring these characters to life. It gets slow, but that adds to the charm. Great movie, although I feel like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid should've won

6/20/24 "True Grit" 1969

When I saw the Coen Brother's True Grit two years ago, I surely thought that this one would be better. This was not. It's the classic story of an unlikely trio trying to stop the outlaw, Tom Chaney, for various different reasons. He murders the father of the 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Kim Darby). She hires Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne) to find Chaney to kill him. On the way, the Texas ranger, La Boeuf (Glen Cambell) joins in to hopefully capture the villain. It's an interesting setup that unfortunately they don't do much with. It's very slow and the action setpieces aren't that great. I was shocked to learn that this was the film John Wayne won his award for, this just wasn't that great of a performance.

4/8/23 "The Wild Bunch" 1969

This movie is the odd segway between two film eras. This film is a very conventional Western with several of the same beats you'd find in every Western since the 30s. It's about a gang who's almost retired trying to pull off one more heist. The problem is it's also segwaying into the new Hollywood era. New Hollywood was started when the hays code was abolished in 1968. With the Hays code abolished, that led to this film basically being "since we can, we will". It feels like it's overly violent for no reason. Many people would look at the violence and say that it's an artistic choice, but it never really feels like that. Also, I feel like the gang is way too big and you never really get that into any of the characters. The two main characters are played by William Holden and Ernest Borgnine, two amazing actors that get wasted in this movie. If you want a better new wave western, watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, not this

6/13/23 "The Learning Tree" 1969

I'm trying to watch the films in the film registry since those are the films that the government archives and makes sure that they're always protected. I'd never heard of this film before, so I was wondering why it was one of the first films in the collection until I googled it to find that this was the first film from a major studio directed by an African American director. It's based on the semi-autobiographical book by the director himself, Gordon Parks (who would later go on to direct Shaft). It's about a young boy named Newt who witnesses his best friend's father murdering someone. He's conflicted about whether he should go to the police since it might jeopardize his friendship and possibly his life. Some of the dialogue in this film just cuts really deep, especially when it comes to race, like every time you hear the word "Boy". Gordon Parks wrote it in such a way that you just feel uncomfortable, like when the white teacher was telling Newt that he could never go to college. I felt like the main character Newt was just an empty vessel for the audience, however. He doesn't really have any noticeable character traits compared to the rest of the characters, and he's one of those characters where things just happen to them without their control. The movie could get really slow at some points, but I can understand how this is an important film. I'm glad it's in the registry.

6/25/23 "Take The Money And Run" 1969

Not only the first Woody Allen-directed film but also credited as the first mockumentary. Note: Woody Allen is an awful human being and needs to be separated from his art since he was a gifted writer. The film is about Virgil Starkwell, one of the worst criminals in the world. It's a really funny premise and the film takes full advantage of this premise with some great gags. This movie is definitely his funniest film, but not his best. The best of his films is still Annie Hall since it combines humor and drama so perfectly.

4/18/24 "Army Of Shadows 1969

This is a hard film to review because it has such intense subject matter, but I feel like the film didn't really do it justice. It's about a man who's in a nazi concentration camp and breaks out to join the resistance. He was put in there by an informant, so when the man leaves the camp, he seeks revenge on him. I thought that the shots were pretty nice but the direction wasn't that great. It felt very slow and tame for such a horrible time in history.

6/30/25 "The Magic Christian" 1969

This film is such an insane experience. It's the most British 60s film you can see with its cast of Peter Sellers, Ringo Starr, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and a small appearance by Christopher Lee. We follow Sir Guy Grand (Peter Sellers), an insanely rich man who adopts a homeless man (Ringo Starr) to be his son. We see throughout the movie how Grand uses money to do anything he wants, and how everyone lets him do so because he has money. It's a really interesting film as we see how Grand can make people do very silly or horrible things with money involved. Some of the film can be a little incoherent, but as a whole it's a really fun movie.

This was a pretty fun movie. We follow a dentist (Walter Matthau) who lies about having a wife to his young girlfriend (Goldie Hawn) in order to get out of marrying her, but she starts to get nervous about their relationship, so the dentist agrees to marry her. The only problem is that she wants to meet the wife who doesn't exist. The dentist decides to use his secretary (Ingrid Bergman) as his fake wife, not knowing that she's loved him for years. It's a really fun setup that leads to a fun movie. I really appreciate the performances, especially this early performance for Goldie Hawn, who won an Oscar for supporting actress. As a whole, I would recommend this film.
