4/30/25 "Mame" 1974

What a joyless musical. Based on the stage musical, which was based on the movie, which was based on the play, which was based on the book, this film has very little of the charm of the previous interpretations. This can be boiled down to the horrible casting of Lucille Ball as Mame. In the original movie, Rosalind Russell brought warmth and love to the original character and made Mame such an endearing character. Lucy, however, plays Mame very cold and agitated; she never seems like she having fun. Maybe if the original casting choice, Angela Lansbury, had been picked, it would have helped with this film's lack of charm, but some of these problems can be boiled down to the pacing itself. Though being 10 minutes shorter than the original, all the scenes seem so boiled down and condensed, to the point where major plot events happen in seconds. This is most likely to give way to the songs, but not even the songs can really save this wishy-washy plot. I'm sure I might like the songs more if I listened to the original cast, but they were pretty forgettable. Lucy's vocals don't help at all; the years of smoking have caught up with her. Gone is her old squeaky, high-pitched voice; now her voice is very low and creaky. Overall, just watch the 50s one.
