2/22/24 "Requiem for a Dream" 2000

Probably ranks up there as one of the saddest films. We follow four different people, Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto), his mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn), his friend Tyrone (Marlon Waynes), and Harry's girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) as their lives get ruined by drugs. Harry, Tyrone, and Marion all become heroin dealers to achieve their dreams. Harry and Marion want to open a clothing store while Tyrone wants to make his mom proud of him. Meanwhile, Sara got an invitation to appear on her favorite game show, but she can't fit in her old red dress. This inspires her to try to lose some weight before the show. She tried a regular diet, but it just didn't work for her, so she went to a physician who gave her Amphetamines to control her diet. Everyone gives a great performance in this film, even Jared Leto?! This might be the one film I can confidently say that he gives a good performance in. The clear winner though it Ellen Burstyn as Sara. She brings such an element of sadness and loneliness to Sara that makes her feel real. While the other three meant to join the world of drugs, she didn't. You can see Sara's story happening to anyone. I'm pretty mixed on the direction of the shots however, because on one hand, they can lead to very innovative sequences, and on the other, they can be sort of tacky. I love the split screens and how they film some of the drug sequences, but some of the transitions are pretty dated (e.g. the seasons' title card falling and making a crash sound). It's clear to see why so many people list this as one of the best films. It's very powerful
