FREE Writing Prompt
We focused on descriptive writing during October because it's just a perfect pairing!
I used this Halloween prompt as a free write to get their juices flowing. You can have students share out their words from their "see, hear, feel" lists to generate a class list. Some students need the visuals for ideas and correct spelling, others may not want to share their words so that their stories can remain a mystery until they share them! I just asked for volunteers to share their ideas.
Later, you can classify the words into parts of speech: nouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. I definitely wouldn't recommend doing that before they write their stories though - they will be excited to write!
The Great Pumpkin Experience
This science and math activity has been one of my favorites every year and side note - I got it from my Dad who taught upper grade for 40 years!! Most students have no idea that pumpkins will float!!
My students did these activities at stations around the room. Most of the measuring and counting they can do on their own/with a classmate, so I definitely recommend stationing yourself at the "see if it will float" station - we all know its not a good idea to leave students unsupervised with a bucket of water! I used a big bucket, filled it halfway with water, and put that station just outside the door so we could keep the outcome a mystery. They were really good at keeping the results hidden so others could enjoy the experience.
A parent note is included and both documents are editable. Download here.
This is the easiest story your students will ever write! They formulate ideas for their story as they create their character & get so excited about the Halloween adventures they can go on!
At the beginning of October, I would break out the construction paper, tissue paper, aluminum foil, scraps of material, yarn, pipe cleaners, ribbons and anything else we could find to have students create a Halloween character. Then they wrote a story starring their character & it was so fun! Students shared their stories and we decorated the room with them.
Choose one or both.
This is so much fun! $2
I created this for my 4th grade classes. It is editable, so you can change the questions to suit your grade level.
Monster Math
Multiplication Bingo
15 different Bingo cards for pairs of students, small groups or whole class. Practice multiplying #s 1-6. Multiplication Bingo $4.99
At LdV, we had a "Five Senses Fall Festival."
Our students would rotate through classrooms to experience fun Halloween/Fall activities based on the senses - Fall flavors & smells, a Light Show Dance Party, etc. I had sound, so I created a Bingo game with Halloween sounds. Play a sound, and students cover the picture or word on their card. Super fun!
You'll notice the Itsy Bitsy Spider sound is a little longer than the rest because whenever I played it, they started doing the hand motions, so we had to finish the chorus!

You can use the Word Cloud generator on ABCya, to classify types of words related to Halloween: nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. I've used this with TK through 5th grade - it's SUPER easy! If you don't have access to computers/ipads, they can write/draw/color/decorate them. I definitely recommend brainstorming with the class and creating a word list. If you do the writing prompt above - students can use words from that list. https://www.abcya.com/games/word_clouds
Use your word list (see above) to generate ideas for descriptive words that can be illustrated.
