Read Alouds for the Beginning of the Year
Do Unto Otters
By Laurie Keller
“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”
“treat others the way you want to be treated”
This is an amazing book for discussing how to treat others.
You can use this book anytime of the year. I have used it during the first few weeks when we are establishing our community and our classroom agreements. But it would also be great any other time you feel your students need a refresher on how to treat others.
I read it aloud and had my students reflect on the message of the book using a notes page I created. We created a chart as a whole class and kept it up for the first month or so of school.
If you want to do in depth lessons with this book, there are over 200 lesson bundles on TPT.
I picked a few that I thought looked thorough - I have not used these, but I like their content. Links below!
This reader uses lots of different voices to represent the characters in the book.
