ISTE Standard 1:1
Empowering Students
Empowering Students
First Resource Overview: This resource offers lessons and activities on how students can take control of their learning. ISTE Standards discuss students becoming empowered learners and one way to ensure this happens is when students are in control of their learning. The lessons and activities align with the ISTE standards by students using technology effectively and ethically. Students also manage their digital footprint. By students understanding how to navigate and utilize technology, this resource promotes self-directed learning.

Second Resource Overview: Project-based learning (PBL) is a powerful way to empower students. This approach expands students' knowledge by allowing them to engage in meaningful, intentional learning experiences through self-directed research. When students conduct their own investigations, they gain a deeper understanding of the importance of their learning and develop a sense of ownership over the process. PBL aligns with ISTE Standard 1-1: Empowered Learner, as it provides opportunities for students to make choices in their learning, set goals, and engage in purposeful activities that foster autonomy and critical thinking.

Third Resource Overview: Hands-on learning is just one way to help students become actively more engaged in their learning. This resource is a learning platform where students can learn to code through creative projects. This resource is known as Scratch. When students design their games, stories, and animations they are problem-solving, critically thinking, and instilling self-set goals. This resource aligns with the ISTE Standard by giving students autonomy and empowering them to take ownership of their learning engagingly.

Fourth Resource Overview: This article discusses how students can become empowered learners by recording themselves solving math problems. Students often have to take a diagnostic, and when the educator and student can see the results and discuss where to improve students can utilize the tool of recoding themselves. They have to know how to explain the math problem and talk it out. By having students do this, it aligns with standard 1:1 because students set goals, and can see the progress firsthand.

Fifth Resource Overview: Students learn best when they can have a real-world example and see that their learning can be applicable in real life. Students can practice skills like leadership, debates, and community service. When students can see the impact they can see their learning come to life. By creating a sense of purpose students can see how their learning can connect to societal issues. This inspires encouragement and deepens commitment to learning.

Sixth Resource Overview: Classcraft is a great tool that aligns with the standards of 1:1. Classcraft is a byproduct of HMH. It allows teachers to see student engagement improve greatly. Students collaborate through turn and talks, polls, and words to learn. Classcraft displays real-time feedback and allows teachers and students to see the progress together. Students build empowerment by working on their communication and interpersonal skills while working on proper netiquette. By students working together, this allows for students to take ownership and responsibility for their part and to work as a team towards the end goals.

Seventh Resource Overview : This video discusses how to follow the standard of 1:1. This video discusses various ways to increase student empowerment. This can be done through actions of choosing, achieving, and demonstrating their knowledge. This video states how when students set personal learning goals, this helps them create a plan in mind to achieve the learning goal. Students can reflect on their knowledge gained as well as their prior knowledge and customize their plans to achieve their learning goals. Students have various options to demonstrate their learning through art, web designs, and portfolios.

Student empowerment in education is a powerful way to have students become more intent with their learning. Students becoming empowered in their classroom leads them to take charge of their learning and have a choice in the matter. Reflecting on my own experiences, I want to utilize these tools in the classroom. In pre-k, students are often told what to do and are not given much choice. By utilizing these standards and resources in the classroom it will allow my students to develop critical thinking skills, communication skills, autonomy skills, and working together with others. Instilling empowered learners helps students recognize that they have a choice in their learning. This can lead more students to be self-directed and enhance their problem-solving skills. They can be curious and want to increase their knowledge or create a project based on their findings and research. To create empowered learners, educators must ensure the classroom is an environment where learners grow, and where educators are not telling students what to do.
