The time needed to implement Quality Matters into your course design can depend on multiple factors:
Are you starting with a new course - designing from scratch?
Are you redesigning an existing course?
Have you completed the Canvas and Quality Matters training?
Do you have time to work with one of our instructional designers?
If you are designing your course from scratch for the first time, you have to allow time for both building your content and assuring that you are implementing Quality Matters standards - though much of Quality Matters is part of designing a course in the first place (i.e. having measurable course objectives and module/chapter objectives). You can also save time by using some of the pre-designed templates for the homepage and welcome module that our instructional designers have provided; those are located in Canvas Commons. The welcome module, once your instructor- and course-specific information is added, meets 50% of the QM rubric on its own. The design and color theme of the module can be modified to match the rest of your course.
If you are redesigning an existing course, we recommend that you first do a course self-review to see how many QM standards your course already meets. Once you have that information, you will have a good idea of how long it will take to fill in the gaps where you have standards that are not met. If you are converting a face-to-face or hybrid course to fully online, you will also want to consider those pre-designed template modules in Canvas Commons to reduce the time necessary for this implementation.
As with most things, if you have successfully completed the training before tackling this implementation, it will make the process go more quickly and smoothly as well. If you need help with any of the training, please contact one of our instructional designers. Speaking of, you might also find it helpful to meet with one of our instructional designers as you begin this implementation in order to lay out a good game plan for this and get some advice about common pitfalls. They are there to help and would be happy to meet and assist with design or brainstorm about how to meet any standards you might be struggling with.
