The ADHD Infographic I developed in my special education course at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln demonstrates my commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive CTE program. The ADHD Infographic provides clear, informative content on ADHD identification procedures. I used reliable sources to outline common symptoms as well as recommended classroom practices. This infographic ensures accessibility for all by providing educators with the information to create a structured and accommodating learning environment for students. The section titled "Recommended Practices for Students" highlights the importance of providing individualized support to ensure students with ADHD receive the accommodations necessary to succeed. In addition, the infographic promotes a bias-free environment by addressing misconceptions about ADHD through data. The statistical data presented helps challenge the stigmas that can be associated with ADHD in children, including undiagnosed cases. This data helps equip me as an educator by providing procedures to support students in a way that is respectful and non-judgmental. Overall, this infographic can help in creating a welcoming class culture by helping foster a greater understanding of ADHD in the classroom. I will use this in my future classroom to promote an inclusive learning environment where students can feel valued and capable of success.
The Diversity Research Project I developed in my Multicultural Education course at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln demonstrates my commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive CTE program. My Diversity Research Project is an account of my experiences of learning about a research participant with a different background from my own. I met with my research participant once a week for an hour for about 8 weeks to understand their experiences in and out of schooling. This project demonstrates my ability to provide inclusive recruitment because it helped me to understand and recruit students from diverse backgrounds. Specifically, this project helped me gain an understanding of the challenges and complexities that my future students may experience in their everyday lives. By understanding these challenges, I can better accommodate future learners with diverse backgrounds and upbringings. In addition, my Diversity Research Project highlights my educator's plan to incorporate a bias-free environment in my program. A suggestion highlighted in my project is striving for a safe classroom space where students feel respected and are encouraged to share their backgrounds/cultures if they feel comfortable with disclosing that information. An example of a concrete experience is promoting the visibility of representation in a classroom by putting up the flags of students of different ethnicities. I plan to use this research project in my agriculture education program to create a space where students can feel valued from all kinds of backgrounds.
My yearly experience with Operation Shine as a Big Camper volunteer, where I have interacted and assisted children from the ages of 7-12 with autism spectrum disorders to create a positive camp experience!
