Interpretation is the transfer of an oral or a written message from one language into another in the oral or verbal form. As translation, interpretation is both a process and the result of the process. Interpretation is therefore the oral or verbal counterpart of translation. While the end product of translation must be written, that of interpretation must be oral. Some types of interpretation include:

• • Simultaneous interpretation; Interpreting simultaneously or at the same time as the main speaker speaks, usually from a well-equipped interpretation booth and during conferences…

  • Consecutive interpretation; Interpreting a few minutes after the main speaker is done with all or part of his presentation; can be done with or without the help of notes, in and out of conference settings…

  • Escort interpretation; Escorting and interpreting speakers during their field visits in the community or for any other visits undertaken. Also known as community interpreting or liaison interpreting, it usually occurs out of a conference setting.

Interpretation can also be practiced in the form of sight interpreting, dubbing and voice-over. Dubbing refers to the audiovisual interpretation of spoken dialogue from one language to another. Sight interpreting is the transfer of a written message orally into another language while voice-over replicates the same process and mechanisms but in the same language (i.e. the voice of an unseen commentator in a film or television program, without having to translate). In the interpretation process, many extremely demanding tasks are conducted by the brain at the same time: listening, understanding, processing, remembering, ‘translating’, speaking, monitoring…
