Is this for real? Or is it busy work? Rachel talks about how much she values it and has used it to improve. If you don't buy into the fact that this will help you, then you won't buy into the process. And it won't help you.
It's so difficult to know what "good" looks like when you're looking at your own work, unless you've seen a model of the skills you're striving for. This is why I love to have you interpret something, and then watch someone else interpret it before you interpret it again.
Rachel gives some more advice that has worked for her.
The first step in your self-assessment of "The Cake" is to watch a model interpretation by Amy Miller which will be posted in GoReact.
1 - General: Looking for patterns of behavior
2 - Specific: Looking for evidence of progress toward specific goals
How to watch your work with each type of assessment in mind. Which one will serve your purpose better?
Remember that it’s important to learn how to look at your work in an OBJECTIVE and KIND way. You can not use language like “I suck at”.. be specific and objective, “the fingerspelling was not in the correct sign space and some of the letters weren’t clear”. That is useful information that we can work on improving. Use Marty Taylor's text to help you identify how to talk about your goals and get tips on how to improve.
Look for PATTERNS of behaviors. For example is the fingerspelling in the incorrect sign space and not clearly produced 3 or more times? Or did it just happen once after you were thrown by a dense concept? Miscues/errors that happen once should be looked at in a different way than patterned behavior.
Patterns have changed the way Rachel looks at her work and she has noticed huge improvements! (And a reminder that she got a 4.1 on her EIPA)
Should you do your assessment right after you tape while it's fresh in your mind or should you let it sit for a while so you can have some distance from it? You might guess that it depends - there are benefits to each.
Some tips for assessment that have helped us!
Content is not something I’m concerned with at this point in your process. This means I do not want you to hyper focus on omissions or how many targets you hit. BUT you have been given a script of the project with marked targets as an EXERCISE in assessing BEI targets and whether or not they have been “hit”. You are not being measured in any way by how many targets you were able to hit. You are not your targets!
You've watched the "master" model, you've completed your assessment... you're ready to talk to Susen and retape, right? You're half right. You're ready to talk to Susen - but before you retape you'll want to do some kind of deliberate process or practice to work on the goals you've set for the retape. Rachel has a great sports analogy!
What we REALLY want you to know - and Rachel shares her biggest tip for documenting her progress... and she starts to go into how she keeps track of everything (if you want more insight into that, check out the bonus video at the end).

If you have you have two versions of the project in GoReact, put comments in the the video that has the better quality.
1) Watch the model interpretation of the project, make note of what she does well - if you have any questions about her work, make comments in GoReact
2) Watch your Project 1 - Keeping in mind your goals before you started, make comments related to those goals. For project 1, in addition to personal goals you had, you were given the goal to use space and role-shifting. Pay special attention to elements that were effective or needed improvement. You'll need to find 3 things you did well, and 3 things that need improvement.
3) Watch for patterns in your work based on information we have talked about - comment on patterns you see in your work.
4) Look at the targets in the text. As an exercise you'll analyze if you believe the information in the target was conveyed. Number each comment according to the target and say either "hit" or "miss" for each. (Download the script with targets from Blackboard).
5) Set up your meeting with Susen for Thursday 10/1 (there will be a sign up sheet).
6) Deliberate Practice your goal for your retape
7) Retape your project
8) Make at least 5 comments in your retaped project. Your first comment should say what your goal was for this project. Your last comment should say how successful you feel you were in achieving that goal. Your remaining 3 comments should be about something that supports that argument that you either did or did not achieve the goal. Your instructor will not watch the full retape. They will only jump to the comments. Comment on the three parts you want them to see.
I recorded this after we were done and Rachel was just talking about her system of recording the signs that people have given her. Whoa!
Really good! Watch this and develop 3 top goals.
