Week 4 - Space / Content Mapping

So far we have talked about how to organize INCOMING information using Gish. This week talks about how to organize OUTGOING information with space.

Content Mapping (aka Discourse Mapping) is organization of information in space so that cohesion is created in the text. Using SPACE in an organized manner. It is always the lowest score on the EIPA and space is one of the biggest struggles of interpreters.

These are the best models I've found because they show what to do, but also what NOT to do. They're super cool!!

Another is the same text but with normal pace and pauses

Activities for you to try:

1) TRY INTERPRETING the English source text (either with or without the pauses). Always record.
2) WATCH the video of the interpreting models WITH SPACE - make mental or written notes about what you notice

3) WATCH the video of the interpreting models with NO SPACE - make menal or written notes about what you notice
4) WATCH your video -- Do you see characteristics of each?

5) INTERPRET IT AGAIN - incorporate what you learned. Record it. Upload it to GoReact. Comment on what you improved.

I don't want you freaking out about not knowing the signs for anything. I want you to just TRY to interpret it and if you don't know the signs, just put your hands in the SPACE you would use if you did know the signs. This is not about perfectly interpreting the WORDS. This is about organizing your target text with space.

Slow this video down to .75 speed on YouTube. (click on the wheel on the Youtube link, select Playback speed and .75). Play this so you can view the video while you're interpreting (not just listen) because there is visual information being shown that you can incorporate into your interpretation.

Now check out the version WITH SPACE -- Do you see how much more sense it makes? Is the text easier to follow? WHY?

Make specific notes (mental notes or actual notes) about where and how the model uses space in ways they didn't in the other version.

Now let's give you something closer to home (not weather) -- Here are a LOT of sample texts to play with. You'll see the ENGLISH version that you can try to interpret. Some of these texts you've seen before. But NOW I've added the ASL version so you can see models for signs and most of all SPACE.

I know it's a lot of videos -- I just wanted to give you a lot of models to look at and play with. This really should be the fun part. Try interpreting it yourself, then look to see how she set up space. Try interpreting it again using what you learned.

NOTE: The speaker is NOT interpreting the English story into ASL. She is RETELLING the same story in ASL - so some information is different. This was an exercise in how each language conveys information.

Use as much space as the interpretation requires, p. 149. Read this section and the possible errors associated with use of space.

Use these exercises as practice - remember to play with space, become characters as much as possible.

The process for practice:

1 - Interpret the story / English text cold -- RECORD YOURSELF

2 - Watch your video to see what you did

3 - Watch the model of the video - compare to what you did and make notes about concepts you want to use.

4 - Interpret the story / English text AGAIN - use the information you learned and incorporate it into your work. Have specific goals. - RECORD YOURSELF

5 - Watch your interpretation again and assess.
