Intentional visualization helps students learn to reflect and think metacognitively about emotions and behavior. Students may react “out of emotion” rather than thinking through a scenario. An awareness of imagery helps students understand themselves and others as they learn to self-manage, making steps toward a fruitful life.
School provides a variety of opportunities for students to learn and practice social emotional skills. Therefore, educators need a practical way to intentionally incorporate these skills into instruction and feedback. Visualization stages and goals serve as a framework to teach social emotional skills. The stages are designed to move students cognitively from Realizing how visualization helps them recognize and manage their own emotions, to Understanding “how” to use this strategy to grow personally and socially, and finally to Applying it to new social emotional circumstances.
