New Mexico Highlands University Print Collection

"Saskia with Pearls in her Hair," Rembrandt, 1634

You’d probably never guess that little Las Vegas, NM, is home to a landmark collection of great master prints and lithographs. We’re talking Rembrandts, Renoirs, Goyas, Matisses, Picassos, and more. But there it is, housed in Kennedy Alumni Hall, 905 University Avenue, on the campus of New Mexico Highlands University.

The Dr. Robert Bell Permanent Art Collection began to take shape in 2013 with several hundred prints and lithographs donated by Bell and artist Eli Levi. Art students at NMHU learn from the collection, but everyone can see it by contacting the NMHU Fine Arts Department.

Dr. Bell, who started collecting prints in his youth, continues to donate from his personal collection. He is a Santa Fe art collector, patron, author, and publisher. If you’re in town at just the right time, you might catch one of his lectures at NMHU, during which he passes around prints from the collection for close inspections.
