For this activity, I used Genially to create a student Choice Board about Medieval Times. Students can use this Choice Board at the end of my unit on the Middle Ages in Europe and choose a topic to research further. Genially is a great technology tool for creating choice boards and it allows the option to include articles, images, maps, or videos for students to click on.
For this activity, my students used the EdTech app, Storyboard That to create a Cause and Effect Chart about the Columbian Exchange. Storyboard That includes options for students to create engaging and creative storyboards with historical backgrounds, characters, and dialogue. It is one of my favorites because it provides opportunities for creativity, includes historical images, scenes, and characters, and my students really enjoy it.
My students were able to demonstrate what they learned about the topics, choose how they wanted to present their ideas, and used creative skills for their storyboards.
This is an example of a page from Book Creator that students can create to show their understanding of the essential question. With Book Creator, students are able to choose how they want to present the information that they learned, and express themselves with images, text, and multimedia elements. The pages and books that they create are uniquely theirs and something to take pride in.
Pedagogical Content Knowledge represents the skills and knowledge that I have learned for providing student choice and autonomy in my lessons. By providing choices for activities such as researching information or completing assignments, my lessons will be differentiated for students. Students will also have a sense of empowerment and ownership when offered choices in their learning activities.
Providing opportunities for students to demonstrate what they have learned with creativity has valuable benefits as well. Creative activities, such as Book Creator and Storyboard That help students to build problem solving skills, higher-order thinking, and a connection to prior knowledge while providing an engaging and enjoyable activity for them.
