I created this Google Slides Lesson Plan that implements the 5Es strategy, thinking routines, and UDL strategies. The lesson begins with the Essential Question for students to focus on and a variety of activities that encourage critical thinking and self-directed learning. Students in my 7th grade classroom will complete the lessons in response to a novel that we are studying in class, called A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park. The lessons also address the English Language Arts content standards for 7th grade, such as finding evidence to support a claim and determining a theme or central idea of a text.
In this course, I learned the value of establishing a strong Essential Question for a unit or lesson plan. The Essential Question should follow several guidelines including:
Is it open-ended?
Does it inspire higher-order thinking?
Does the question require justification and an explanation?
Is the question interesting?
The Essential Question is a valuable instructional tool because it gives students a purpose for learning, develops a topic for them to discuss, and encourages them to provide their own thoughts and opinions with supporting evidence.
Content knowledge represents the skills and knowledge that I have learned in order to make the content that I teach more relevant to today's learners. I teach 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies to students in a hybrid charter school. In order to be able to teach the skills that my students need to learn, I am learning how to make my lessons more engaging, applicable, and relevant by applying a variety of instructional techniques, using visual and multimedia elements, and providing resources that students use to learn more about a topic.
