"Panel Discussion on Physics Modeling", Friday at 4:00
Panelists: Carl Wenning (moderator), Jim Stankevitz, Joselita Velasco, Johan Tabora, Yvonne Richter, Rodger Baldwin, Mona Hicks, Barbara Gottemoller, and John Sunta

"Project ARISE: A Revolution in Science Education", Friday evening banquet speaker
Leon Lederman, Pritzker Professor of Physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology

There is ample evidence that we are still a nation at risk. Our schools are clearly not producing students who can keep the nation at the frontier of science and mathematics. Immigration is dropping rapidly. We need radical reform of our science education and I will describe "a plan".

During his talk, Dr. Lederman listed some scientific attitudes that we should strive to have our students develop through our teaching:

A blend of curiosity and ego
Humility in relation to heritage
Skepticism about the universal validity of what has been learned
A liberating sense of freedom to question authority
An open mindedness towards new ideas
A confidence in reality
A faith in the ultimate beauty and simplicity of nature
A requirement for diversity in minds and cultures that have made science

"Teacher Candidate Recruitment, Preparation, and Retention", Saturday at 8:00
A roundtable discussion lead by Carl Wenning, Illinois State University

"Problem Based Learning: A Bridge to Inquiry in Physics", Saturday at 10:00
Deb Gerdes and Mike Lejcar, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
