This exam, with a duration of 45, requires you to analyse an unseen text. You'll have the choice of analysing a poem or an extract from a work of prose. Each question will be accompanied with three bullet points that are there to guide your attnetion to some of the key aspects of the text.
This question is worth 25 marks, and it counts for 25% of your grade.
Here is an essay plan for the poem 'Insomnia.' Look at this essay plan to see how the student has addressed all of the bullets in the question. You'll notice that there isn't even attention given to each bullet point. That's OK! Remember, the bullet points are there to suggest some things to include in your answer: you don't have to structure your answer around these bullets.
Aside from the numerous past papers that are online, you can choose unfamiliar poems and texts to write about. In order to practice unseen poetry, you can access a wide range of poems from Poetry Foundation, which you can analyse according to theme. As for prose, you could work with a study partner and suggest an except from a text that you've read. This might be an interesting way to share things that you've been reading with a friend.
