Whilst Paper 1 still assesses some the students' writing skills, it is a reading paper. The two main aspects of the test are as follows:
Reading Skills: This involves comprehension, understanding of writer's effects, and the ability to summarise information. Students are provided with one or more passages, and they need to read and respond to a series of structured questions that test their ability to understand, interpret, and comment on the texts. This might include understanding the main idea, identifying specific details, explaining the writer's techniques, and summarising certain parts of the text.
Extended Reading Response: Based on the provided texts, students are asked to perform a specific writing task, such as writing a letter, report, journal entry, interview, speech or article. This task checks the students' ability to understand and interpret the given material, extract relevant information, and then produce a coherent written response in the specified format from a particular perspective.
The exam is 2 hours in total. It's recommended that you spend that time in the following way:
45 minutes - Reading Comprehension
30 minutes - Writer's Effect
45 Minutes - Extended Reader's Response
