The Miracle Island (Dhidduwa)
Beautiful Maduganga
The Madu Ganga is a minor watercourse which originates near Uragasmanhandiya in the Galle District of Sri Lanka, before widening into the Madu Ganga Lake at Balapitiya. The river then flows for a further a 4.4 km before draining into the Indian Ocean. It is located 88 km south of Colombo and 35 km north of Galle.
IGC Campus started its conservation project at the Miracle Island, previously know as Dhidduwa which is located in the eastern part of the river.
Miracle island is a 34 acre cinnamon island in the middle of this beautiful biodiversity haven, Maduganga. There are about 16 cinnamon growers who owns cinnamon land plots of this island and they collectively work to create an eco-tourism initiative in this island mainly to attract tourists and promote wetland conservation around it. They called themselves, Miracle Island's Green Community
Their mission is to convert this cinnamon island in to natural forestry that can accommodate nature lovers from around the world. They are collaborating with the relevant government entities to set standards to protect wetland environment as well as to build green resorts in the selected locations.
Attracting foreigners to visit, enjoy and save this biodiversity paradise.
Develop basic infrastructure using sustainable means.
Promoting renewable energy driven boat safaris.
Building eco-resorts for sustainable accommodation.
Promotion of eco-friendly rafting and comoving.
Build a conservation fund for wetland research and development activities.
The purpose of the proposed research and conservation center is mainly to implement community driven replanting activates to preserve mangroves colony around Miracle island. Secondly it will facilitate research activities inviting and helping wetland related researchers form around the world.
The community participation is critical to reduce water and land pollution around the river and therefore, the project will focus on educating boat operators, local and foreign visitors and cinnamon growers who live next to the river.
Mangroves nursery will be maintained by the project to educate visitors and to give them a conservation experience of planting mangroves as part of their safari.
The research center will provide accommodation and other facilities for interested researchers to carry out their studies on Maduganga wetland and its biodiversity.
Identifying and marking-up of restricted No-Fishing zones is also one of the future interventions to preserve the aqua life of Maduganga river.
The community around Maduganga are mainly cinnamon growers, cinnamon peelers, fishermen, boat riders and tourism operators. They all share this precious resource directly or indirectly for their livelihoods. The cinnamon variety grown around the river is unique and has the best harvest compared to other cinnamon cultivations.
However, unintentionally these communities create numerus challenges that threaten the aqua life of the river lagoon.
Therefore, the project has created a community forum to create a positive dialogue. IGC Campus and Miracle Island's Green Community facilitates this forum. All those stakeholders work together to find collective solutions to minimize water pollution and to reduce impact on lagoon's aqua life.
In return, IGC Campus supports the community to increase the income levels of their families while educating them and enhancing their skillsets.
Promotion of organic cinnamon cultivation around the river is the other aspect that supports the grower community to increase their income and value they create.
