Summer Institute

Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute and Navajo Technical University co-hosted the 2017 summer institute at SIPI in Albuquerque, NM from June 26 to August 18. This institute aims to bring together five tribal colleges to learn advanced manufacturing techniques and put those skills to practical use to build an educational rover and autonomous quadcopter.

There are five courses associated with the summer institute:

  • Metrology: the study of measurement
  • Advanced CADD: to learn 3D modeling for 3D printing
  • Mechatronics: the integration of electronic control systems with mechanical systems
  • Computer Science 4 All: a computational science course designed to be friendly for those with little or no computing experience

The Summer Institute also includes several field trips to industries around Albuquerque as well as technical workshops.

Metrology

Instructor: Harold Scott Halliday

Understanding mechanical tolerances is key to manufacturing a workable design. This course will teach students the fundamentals of translating digital measurements to real world parts, and vice versa. Students will take the lessons learned in this course and apply them to the educational rover and UAV projects during this summer institute.

Advanced CADD

Instructor: Mojgan Maadandar

Students enrolled in this course will learn how to use AutoCAD to create 3D models. The skills students acquire from this class will allow them to redesign features of the UAV such as the arms and landing gear.

Mechatronics

Instructor: Jonathan West

Design methodology and development of professional project-oriented skills including communication, team management, and economics are the focus of this course. Working in teams, students will prepare each component of the ROV-S educational rover following ISO standard wiring diagrams. they will also build the mechanical structures of the design and program the microcontrollers.

Computer Science 4 All (CS4A)

Instructor: Wayne Just

Students will use the NetLogo programming environment in this course and use it to learn general programming practices and methods.
