VIP ROSE STEM: Vertically Integrated Projects for Research, Outreach, and Student Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics!

Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) is one of two post-secondary institutions operated by BIE, was featured on New Mexico public radio station KUNM for its Intelligent Cooperative Multi-Agent Robotic System (I-C-MARS) project. SIPI, home to one of the largest tribal college engineering programs in the United States, received funding from the NASA Tribal College and University Experiential Learning Opportunity (TCU-ELO) grant to allow students to work with rovers in a simulated Martian environment called a Mars yard and to expose Native American students to more science and math courses.

The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) Engineering and Engineering Technology Programs are receiving national recognition for innovation in delivering STEM education to Native American students. Over the last 20 years, the programs have grown in quality and enrollment. SIPI faculty, staff, and students have implemented a simulated MARS yard and robotics program to provide hands-on learning in coding, 3-D printing, manufacturing, physics and mathematics. The College serves as a hub to a network of K-16 educational institutions for the development and dissemination of curriculum, software, and supplies allowing students to manufacture and operate their own rovers and drones. This past summer, SIPI hosted in partnership with Navajo Technical University six tribal colleges during an eight week Advanced Manufacturing Technology Summer Institute.

Recently, SIPI students reached a historic milestone after they won the grand prize in the 2017 NASA Swarmathon Competition held at the Kennedy Space Center. More than 500 students from 40 colleges and 30 high schools participated in the competition. SIPI also placed third in the inaugural 2016 NASA Swarmathon national competitions back in 2016. This followed two years of winning national championships in the Indian Energy Program sponsored competitions in 2009 and 2010.

SIPI received the Toyota Tribal College and University STEM Award in 2017 in recognition of the pre-engineering programs incorporation of hands-on and intergenerational learning in STEM programs and research. Finally, Dr. Nader Vadiee, Engineering Program Coordinator, was bestowed the inaugural "Digital Inclusion Award” in 2017 by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) and GlobalMindED. He was recognized for his student focus, involvement in using technology for students’ personal and professional development, and encouraging data on STEM graduation rates and retention with under-served student populations.

SIPI has an extensive network of federal, private, and industry partners. Earlier this year the SIPI pre-engineering program received more than $800K in grant funding from NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense to expand this work nationally to schools with high Native American enrollment.
