Eccremocarpus scaber

The common name of Eccremocarpus scaber is Chilean Glory Vine. Like many of the other plants we grow in southern Wisconsin, this is a perennial that we grow as an annual. It is a vine that grows up a trellis. In the past, there were nurseries that sold plants. However, we are not aware of any nurseries who still sell plants. So, if you want to grow this, you must start it from seed.

The seed source is critical. I have found that the best seeds which will germinate are from Select Seeds:

This is an exceedingly challenging plant to grow from seed. Be prepared for frustration and perhaps failure. The seeds need to be started inside at least 6 to 8 weeks or more before the last frost. Although online sources state that the seed can take up to 60 days to germinate, I have found that the seeds generally germinate within 2 weeks. The seedlings will grow very slowly initially. Then, they will later take off and the plants will grow quickly. If you want directions on how I start the seeds, please send an email.

This plant does not like to be too dry, nor too moist. Also, this plant does not survive very hot weather. (The ideal climate for this plant is in the Pacific Northwest. This plant would definitely not survive in the southern half of the U.S.)

When these plants are blooming, the hummingbirds love to go to the flowers.
