Phaseolus coccineus

The common name of Phaseolus coccinius is scarlet runner bean. Scarlet runner bean is a fun annual and is used quite a bit by the hummers. After the flowers fade, a seed pod forms with new seeds inside. These should be picked in order to encourage this climbing vine to continue to flower. You only need to purchase one packet of this because the daughter seeds will keep you and many neighbors supplied. Let the seed pods dry and then harvest the seeds. We have started the seeds inside in order to get a head start. We have also found that if these rapid growing plants are 4 or 5 inches tall prior to placing in the ground, then they are less likely to be eaten by bunnies. However, we still need to protect the young plants with chicken wire.
