HMTC is run entirely by a committed team of volunteer members who offer their time and expertise for the benefit of the wider HMTC community.
Our friendly voluntary committee meet regularly to co-create a high-quality theatrical experience while fostering a welcoming, creative environment for local talent to thrive.
Working closely, the Committee make decisions and take action in regards to choosing forthcoming productions, perform never-ending administrative (and prop making!) tasks, and ensures that the Company stays above board so it can continue to thrive for another hundred years.
Committee members are typically (re)elected during the Annual AGM, and - providing there is an available position - any HMTC member over the age of 18 is welcome to put themselves forward for the committee.
If you have any questions or need support, please do not hesitate to ask any of the committee members.

Many thanks to our fabulous social committee, Elizabeth, Denni and Diana for all their fundraising efforts!
In October 2026, HMTC was awarded a £9,800 Step-Change Grant from the Two Ridings Community Foundation to professionally deliver its Shaping the Next Act project.
As HMTC approaches its 130th anniversary, the Committee recognised the need to work more strategically to secure the company’s future - strengthening resilience, improving resources, and embedding HMTC more deeply as a genuinely community-led amateur theatre company. This work is essential if HMTC is to continue creating, performing, and inspiring its local community for the next 130 years.
A key strand of this ambition is the transition to Registered Charity status and the development of sustainable external funding streams to keep participation accessible. Equally important is the need to build stronger strategic and grassroots relationships across the wider Hull and East Riding community. This level of organisational development requires sustained time, expertise, and focus - capacity that cannot reasonably be delivered by volunteers alongside the extensive (and often invisible) labour involved in producing high-quality, community-centred theatre.
This funding enables HMTC to deliver this work professionally. The Two Ridings grant is now supporting the organisation to apply for additional funding, strengthen governance, collect and analyse data, develop practical tools and resources, build strategic partnerships across the VCSE sector, foster trust with underrepresented communities to widen participation, and progress towards CIO charitable status. It is a substantial and ambitious programme of work, and one that represents a major step forward for the company.
The Committee agreed that the most suitable person to deliver this work professionally is Committee Member Lauren Saunders. Lauren is a freelance creative artist and cultural consultant with over a decade of experience working within and developing public sector and VCSE organisations. She has a strong track record of delivering high-quality outcomes for organisations like HMTC, with particular expertise in funding applications, data storytelling, and policy development. She also brings well-established strategic connections across the local cultural and wellbeing sectors that directly support HMTC’s long-term ambitions. Having been an active member of HMTC for three years, and a Committee volunteer for two, Lauren brings both professional expertise and lived understanding of the organisation, its members, and its volunteers. This project does not replace the regular volunteer work that she does already (and will continue to do voluntarily) and the Committee, led by the Chair Jane Bradley, continues to have oversight and direction of this Step-Change project. The Committee is confident that Lauren combines the skills, insight, creativity and commitment needed to deliver this work effectively - and always with the best interests of HMTC at heart.
As this work progresses, Lauren may occasionally invite members, volunteers, and audiences to share their experiences, complete short forms, or offer feedback after performances. These requests will always be optional, straightforward, and designed to fit around people’s time and comfort levels. Any information shared will be handled responsibly, used only for HMTC’s organisational development and funding purposes, and stored in line with GDPR requirements. You can ask Lauren anything you need to about this, she will be happy to help.
Taking part, where you’re able, makes a real difference. Sharing your experiences helps HMTC better understand its impact, strengthen future funding applications, and make informed decisions that benefit the whole community. Even small contributions help ensure the Company remains welcoming, inclusive, and accessible for current and future members.
Here's to another 130 years of amateur community theatre in Hull!
Another person you might see regularly at rehearsals is our very own photographer-in-residence, Heidi! She supports HMTC by taking the most incredible photographs of our performers and backstage supporters.
We are very proud to have Heidi as our Resident Photographer - she's great!
