Apply to be a Student Writing Tutor!

The Writing Center is always accepting applications for new student writing tutors! 

All positions are part-time. When positions are open, interviews will take place in December (for a Spring semester start) and May (for a Fall semester start). 

Student Writing Tutor Application (for students only)

Are you a strong writer? Do you enjoy helping other students learn? The Writing Center is always looking for outstanding student writers with excellent interpersonal communications skills to work as tutors. Training will be provided.

 

Student Writing Tutor Applicants must:

2.    Have completed English 101 with a grade of B+ or better. (If English 101 was completed at another college, applicant must provide an unofficial transcript.) 

3.    Have a current overall GPA of 3.4 or better.

4.    Provide a typed letter of interest (one page or less) that answers the following questions: 1) Why do you want to be a writing tutor?; and 2) What skills will you contribute to the Writing Center? 

5.    Provide the names and e-mail addresses of two references. Housatonic Community College faculty references are preferred. All references should be from faculty, teachers, or staff with whom you have a professional, academic relationship; references from family members and/or friends will not be accepted. Please choose references who can comment on both your writing ability and on your ability to work with others.

 

Please submit your application materials to Professor Karyn Smith, Writing Center Coordinator, Lafayette Hall, room 152. Finalists will be asked to interview at a later date. Finalists may also be asked to take the Accuplacer test before the official job offer; applicant’s scores must meet English 101 standards (or higher).

Hiring decisions will be made based on a successful application and interview process, faculty recommendations, and based on Writing Center staffing needs (courses and times).
