1924年的九龍酒店及1962年的美輪大酒店

九龍酒店是一幢7層高的建築物，建於1923年，位於中間道漢口道交匯處，當時全九龍最高的大廈。根據政府的舊記錄，酒店業主是一名華人，名叫賴添華。據聞他起初並未獲得建築物監管局的旅館經營許可證書。1925年，半島酒店在對面馬路開業後，九龍酒店迅速成為該地區的二流旅館。而酒店週圍地鋪亦租給多間商店，包括理髮店，照相館，美容院，酒吧和著名的夏利萊裁縫店(Harilela's Customs-Tailors)。第二次世界大戰期間，日軍佔據酒店並用作為轉移赤柱集中營前之西方人臨時拘禁營。面對1950年代的戰後經濟衰退，九龍酒店最終售給一家馬來西亞公司以進行重建。它於1955年被拆除。在1960年代初，遊客和為殖民政府工作的英國國民激增，引發了尖沙咀的旅館熱潮。美輪大酒店（180間客房）始建於1962年。該酒店於1982年出售給香港上海大酒店集團，並與半島閣一起拆除，建造新的「九龍酒店」(736間客房)。 2004年12月，酒店以19.3億港元出售給長江實業及和記黃埔，並成為海逸酒店集團下的成員酒店，九龍酒店商場則設於地庫部分。

Kowloon Hotel in 1924 and Merlin Hotel in 1962

The Kowloon Hotel was a 7-storey building completed in 1923 at the intersection of Middle Road and Hankow Road, the tallest building in Kowloon at the time. Based on old government records, the proprietor was a Chinese by the name of Lai Tin-wah. At first, he had failed to obtain the necessary certificate from the Building Authority before the building was allowed to be operated as a hotel. After the opening of The Peninsula Hotel across the street in 1925, the Kowloon Hotel was quickly becoming a second-rate hostelry in the area. The ground floor was leased to shops including barbershops, photo printing shops, beauty parlors, bars and the famous Harilela's Customs-Tailors. During WWII, it had become a holding camp where the Japanese soldiers interned many allied civilians before moving them to the Stanley Camp. Facing post-war recession in the 1950's, the rundown hotel was eventually sold to a Malaysian business firm for redevelopment. It was demolished in 1955. In the early 1960's, the surge of tourists and British nationals coming to work for the colonial government had triggered a hotel boom in Tsim Sha Tsui. Hotel Merlin (180 rooms) was built on the premise in 1962. The hotel was sold to the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels group in 1982 and was demolished along with Peninsula Court for the construction of "The Kowloon Hotel." In December of 2004, the hotel was sold to Cheung Kong and Hutchison Whampoa at HK$ 1.93 billion, and became a member hotel of the Harbour Plaza Hotels and Resorts Group.
