Origin Date: October 13, 1775

The Continental Navy (the first US navy) was established at the beginning of the American Revolution. On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress purchased two armed ships to attack British supply ships to keep supplies from reaching British soldiers in the colonies. That same day a naval committee oversaw the purchase of the ships and wrote a set of regulations for the ships management. Thus, the official US Navy was created.
