Origin Date: August 4, 1790
The Coast Guard’s Official History began on August 4, 1790, when George Washington signed the Tariff Act which authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce federal tariff and trade laws. This fleet was known as the Revenue Cutter Service, and as the nation continued to grow, so did the fleet. This ultimately led to the Coast Guard getting its official name under an act of Congress in 1915 that merged the Revenue Cutter Service with the U.S. Life-Saving Service.
