GEMS is a mnemonic for the order of operations in math, standing for Grouping symbols, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left-to-right), and Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right). In this system, multiplication and division have equal priority, and are performed from left to right as they appear, as are addition and subtraction. Some sources may use the full acronym GEMDAS to be more explicit about the M/D and A/S steps.
