Black Mountain College

Many of the artists presented in Harry's Collection attended Black Mountain College - an experimental democratically run school opened in 1933 in the mountains of South Carolina. It helped bring about Art as social practice. Artists like John Cage, Rauschenberg, Cunningham and many others learned and taught there. It closed in 1957. Many of the artists moved to New York City, they and their work brought about NYC as the beginning avante guard art in United States. Although largely unrecognized, women had a significant role in the operation of the college. Black Mountain College was not interested in creating artists as much as active citizens in a democracy".
