The "Black Death" -- a term we still use for the pandemic which swept Europe in the 14th century -- was the most catastrophic medical event in recorded human history. Historians continue to debate how many people died during the years that the pestilence raged across 'the known world'. Yet, in order to fully understand the historical significance of the Black Death, one has to examine the experience and impact of the plague in all its historical contexts. In Fall 2019, the UNC Charlotte students in HIST 2140 undertook the collaborative project of investigating the 8 major research categories in the medical history of the Black Death. This website presents their results.
