3. MacGregors

Ann Passaportis’ tree had included a note saying that William MacGregor had a sister named Rachel MacGregor. Robert Russell succeeded in tracking down a Rachel MacGregor https://clan-cameron.org.au/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I57948&tree=cameron1 with parents named Donald MacGregor, farmer, and Kathryn Macgregor of Lerigan . As James Mohr had a son named Donald b. 23/11/1739 http://hal_macgregor.tripod.com/gregor/tree.html , it was thought possible that Donald Rory could be the same person as Rorie Buidhe. Donald married Katherin MacGregor 20/1/1769 at Fortingall (OPR 355 FA 0010 0235). Their children *: John; Duncan; Duncan; Rachel and John were born in Fortingall between 1770 and 1779. William was born in 1786 (d 9 Jan 1870), so Donald Rorie could have been William’s father if Kathryn had died and he had remarried.

Research into the MacGregors of Lerigan brought up an article on the Cameron's of Rannoch: https://archive.org/details/celticmagazine06unkngoog/page/n343/mode/2up?q=Lerigan

'V. Ewen Cameron, called sometimes Ewen Du an Daraich (Black Ewen of the Oak), factor to Sir Neil Menzies, Bart. He was born at Camuserochd in 1759 and died there in 1844, aetat 85. He married, in 1805, Rachel, daughter of Macgregor of Lerigan, and grand-daughter of Alister Mac-Gillespa,* the last of the ancient family of Macgregors of Ardlarich. Rachel lived till the year 1871, and was 94 years old at her death. Her brother, the late Captain John Macgregor of the 24th Foot, has left a MS. history of the Macgregors and Camerons of Rannoch, embodying the result of much careful research.

Two of Ewen's sons are still alive: (i), Robert, the eldest of the family; (2), Angus, born 18 19, residing at St. Georges, Gloucester. He married Jessie, daughter of the late Dr. Johnstone of Edinburgh, with issue — three sons and three daughters.

VI. Robert Cameron, Prospect Hill, Gourock, the present representative of the family, was born in Rannoch in 1809. He married, in 1840, Jessie, daughter of the late Lieutenant John Macdonald of the East India Company's service, with issue —

(I.) John, M.D., Edinburgh, J. P. for Argyleshire.

(2.) Evan, M.D., died 1871.

(3.) Ann, married with issue.

(4.) Christina.

(5.) Duncan, M.A., Indian Civil Service, married, in 1885, Jessie-Sophia, daughter of the late Captain Russell Thomas Birch, of the 20th Foot, and grand-daughter of Sir William Russell, Bart, of Charlton Park, Gloucester.

(6.) Robert William Dickenson, M.D., Edinburgh.

* Captain Macgregor states that his grandfather, this Alexander Macgregor of Ardlarich, was the heir of the Macgregors of Glenstrae, and, as such, claimed the title of Chief of the Clan Gregor. Alexander died in 1788 at the age of 85. His only son died young, and with him the male line became extinct.

The families of Ardlarich, Dunan, and Lerigan were offshoots of the House of Roro, in Glenlyon,’

It was interesting to note that John MacDonald was described as a Lieutenant in the East India Company, which might help to track him down.

Also that Rachel’s brother, Captain John MacGregor, had produced a manuscript of the history of the MacGregors of Rannoch. This has yet to be located. http://glendiscovery.com/macgregor_of_dunan.html

The Genealogy of The Clan Gregor - 50 - Learagan in Rannoch http://glendiscovery.com/gregor-genealogy-50.html shows Captain John MacGregor's father to be Duncan MacGregor and his mother to be Janet MacGregor, his own paternal cousin. This is somewhat in conflict to the Cameron history.

There is a reference to a Family Tree of the MacGregors of Lerigan in the MacGregor Archives at the National Library of Scotland https://digital.nls.uk/catalogues/guide-to-manuscript-collections/inventories/acc13527.pdf #324, which has yet to be studied.

We believe that Donald/Roderick was at Achtercairn in 1757 as a tenant of Mackenzie of Gairloch under the name of "Rory Buy", during the proscription when it was illegal to use the surname MacGregor

The basis for thinking that Donald/Rorie McG was at Achtercairn in 1757 may have been Gairloch Estate records. I couldn’t find this reference but remembered that I had obtained 1767 -1792 records of MacGregors in the Estate Records when I visited Gairloch Museum. These showed Donald McG as tenant at Achnacairn/ Ahanakaun / Anacuan . https://sites.google.com/view/highland-roots/11-macgregors-of-gairloch I may have been confused in thinking that Achtercairn was the same place but now realise that it is near Gairloch, on the coast, whereas Achnacairn is near Kinlochewe https://www.google.co.uk/maps/d/edit?mid=1zHgiyJIWQ6MeO20bUecPJYvz7II&ll=57.75449675095837%2C-5.500727097089976&z=1

This hypothesis has yet to be further explored.

Further research brought up mention of the Clan Gregor DNA project at: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/MacGregor/default.aspx?section=results .

Looking at the results, it appeared that this family line could be connected to William MacGregor but no definite links have yet been established.

Kit 85272 The earliest known ancestor for this branch is in the 1841 census for Lochbroom at Carnoch Alexander McGregor aged 60 therefore born abt 1780. Married to Margaret McDonald aged 57. They were married in Lochbroom 28 Feb 1805. Angus McGregor, son, aged 28 (christened at Lochbroom 18 Nov1810). Mary McGregor, daughter, aged 20. Another son, living next door, Duncan McGregor married to Janet McDonald. Unfortunately, both Alexander and Margaret died before 1855, so any death certificates would not provide parents names etc.

Alistair McLeod, at the Inverness library first told the submitter this story, and it is generally accepted in the Lochbroom area, that these McGregors came from Torridon area about the beginning of the 19th century – a place by the name of Baden Mhughaidh which is a few miles east of Shieldaig. They were brought up to Carnoch by John McDonald a tacksman who later went to Lewis. It is possible that they were descendants of McGregors settled in the Torridan area by Alexander McKenzie of Coul, half brother of Roderick McKenzie of Castle Leod ie tutor of Kintail. Roderick paid heavy fines for sheltering McGregor refugees after the King outlawed the name in the 17th century.

Two other MacGregor lines with connections to Gairloch are shown in 14.

I have not taken a DNA test, yet, so am unable to confirm any possible links to these groups.

Further exploration of William's MacGregor's ancestry is detailed in sections 19, 20 and 22
