15. Which MacKenzies

Appendix 2

A. KENNETH MACKENZIE (1710-1789) Third of Dundonnel. (Brother of William MacKenzie 5th Earl of Seaforth) in 1737,

married Jean, daughter of Sir Kenneth Mackenzie, IV. and first Baronet of Scatwell (d 1786), with issue – (see History of Mackenzies)

1. George (1740-1816), his heir and successor. m 1785 d 26/9/1816 See: Dundonnell Cause - Second Trial https://books.google.fr/books?id=drIuAAAAIAAJ

2. Kenneth, a W.S. who died in 1790, and whose issue, if any, is unknown.

3. William, an Episcopalian minister, who married, with issue.

4. Roderick, who was also married, with issue, but of whose descendants, if any, nothing is known.

5. Captain Alexander of 73rd Regiment, who died in India in 1783, without issue. https://www.seekingmyroots.com/members/files/G004685.pdf

6. Captain Simon of 71st Regiment (Lieutenant in 1791), who was married, and died in Nairn in 1812, whether with or without issue, at present unknown.

7. Captain Lewis of 71st Regiment (Lieutenant in 1791), who died in India, without issue.

8. Janet, who married Colin Mackenzie, Jamaica brother of George Mackenzie, Kildonan of Lochbroom without issue (son of James MacKenzie of Kildonan). She died in 1783. (seperate reports state that she was widow of Murdoch MacKenzie, Tacksman of 'blank' in 1793 https://www.seekingmyroots.com/members/files/G004685.pdf p62)

9. Isabella, who died unmarried.

This family profile appears to closely fit Mary Frederica’s description. However, it is reported that Kenneth (aged 80) died 24 May 1789 (see https://books.google.fr/books?id=U-4RAAAAYAAJ p309 and https://www.ssns.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/05_Bangor-Jones_NWRoss_pp_79-117.pdf ) and that his wife predeceased him in 1769 (Further evidence in the Scots Magazine indicates that Mrs Jean MacKenzie died 4 Apr 1786 See https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=nyp.33433081660072&view=1up&seq=217&q1=Jean%20MacKenzie p207). So, unless these dates are wrong or Sir Kenneth remarried, sadly, the dates don’t fit. Census records indicate that William MacGregor was born in 1786.

B. SIR LEWIS MACKENZIE, third Baronet and sixth of Scatwell.

He was born in 1715 and in 1739 married Isabella, eldest daughter of Colin Mackenzie, I. of Mountgerald, with issue -

1. Roderick, his heir and successor.

2. Colin married Janet, daughter of J. Sprot, Edinburgh. He died in 1814. By his wife, he had issue –

(1) Colin, who died unmarried, in 1841;

(2) Mark, who died unmarried, in 1856;

(3) Lewis, Major in the Royal Scots Greys, who married, in 1820, Nancy, only child and heiress of Samuel Forrester Bancroft. He died in 1853, with issue –

(a) Lewis Mark Mackenzie, I. of Findon and Mountgerald. He died unmarried in 1856

(b) Augustus Colin, who also died unmarried, in 1865;

(c) Sir James D. Mackenzie, Baronet, Major half-pay, who, born in 1830, served in the 79th and 14th Regiments;

(d) Earnest Bancroft, who died unmarried in 1861;

(e) Colin, who died young;

(f) Nancy Copley, who married Thomas Antony Lister of Gargrave.

3. Lewis, who died in the West Indies, unmarried.

4. George, Colonel 72nd Regiment, who married Joan, daughter of John Campbell of Wellwood, Ayrshire, with issue –

(1) Lewis, Captain 72nd Regiment (b 1778 d 1803 Capetown), who married Jane, daughter of William Logan;

(2) John Campbell, Lieutenant 5th Regiment, subsequently Sheriff-Substitute of Lanark. He married, in 1810, Marie Barbier Deshayeux;

(3) George, who died young;

(4) another George, who died unmarried;

(5) Isabel, who died young;

(6) Catherine, who died unmarried;

(7) Jane, who married William Forrester Bow, M.D.

5. Lilias, who died unmarried, in 1777.

Sir Lewis was served heir to his father in 1752. His wife died in 1786 at Findon, and he died in 1756, when he was succeeded by his eldest son.

"Sir Lewis Mackenzie, Baronet [s. 1703], of Scatwell, 1st s. and h., b. 1715 ; suc. to the Baronetcy, 24 April 1750. He m. in 1739, Isabel, da. of Colin Mackenzie, of Mountgerald, by Catharine, da. of James Fraser, of Auchnagairn. He d. 13 Sep. 1756, at Findon, aged 41. His widow d. there 4 May 1786." https://goo.gl/RGrDUp

There are similarities with Mary Frederica’s account but it was George, not Lewis, who was Colonel at the Cape and there is no evidence that George died out there. Sir Lewis died long before his wife but there is no indication that she re-married. She is reported as living at Findon, on the Black Isle, rather than anywhere near Gairloch but it is interesting that William moved to Achonachie, which was on or immediately adjacent to the Scatwell Estate in the Conon valley.

C. ALEXANDER MACKENZIE, Second of Lochend, who married, first, Anne, second daughter of Colin Mackenzie, I. of Mountgerald, with issue -

1. Lewis, who died before his father, unmarried.

2. Captain John III (c1763-1830), who succeeded to the estate of Lochend. (His daughter, Anne, married Alexander Stewart, Chamberlain of Lewis up to 1835)

3. Alexander, who was married, but of whom nothing further is known.

4. James, of whom there is no trace.

5. Annabella, who married John Mac Iver, Stornoway, with issue.

6. Lilias, who married Iver Mac Iver, Gress, Lewis, with issue.

He married secondly, Annabella, daughter of Sutherland of Little Torboll, with issue -

7. Lewis, of whom nothing is known.

8. Elizabeth, who married a Mr Mackenzie, with issue.

Unfortunately, the trees that I have found include very few dates and I can find no evidence that Lewis served in the Army. However, Lewis' uncle, George, was definitely a Lt Colonel in 78th regiment (Seaforth Highlanders) and his brother, John, was a Captain. Possibly of more significance is the fact that his sisters married a John MacIver of Stornoway and Ivor MacIver of Gress. An Evander MacIver, Tacksman of Gress, was mentioned in John Mackenzie’s, Tacksman of Galson’s, will prior to William MacGregor inheriting Galson Farm.

Coincidentally, Sir Lewis MacKenzie of Scatwell wife, Isabella, and Alexander MacKenzie of Lochend’s first wife Anne, were sisters.
