NOTE 1: From a History of Fortrose written by Elizabeth Sutherland

http://www.fortrosemarkie.org/fortrose.htm

It states… “Situated on the Ness, the Black Isle Combination Poor-House was opened for custom in 1861. The term 'combination' meant that the Poor-house combined in its complex a hospital and an asylum. It catered for vagrants, jobless and the destitute and was run like a prison by a governor and matron under the administration of an Inspector of the Poor. A family called Gillanders, father, son and grandson held this post successively from 1845 until the law was changed.”

Donald Fraser, born 1822, son of James F., teacher, and Sarah Scott ; educated at King s College, Aberdeen; app. missionary at Glengarry in 1855; pres. by Queen Victoria 5th Nov. 1856 ; adm. 12th March 1857 ; died 4th Feb. 1869. He marr. 7th June 1857, Sophia (died 2nd Feb. 1900), daugh. of George Gillanders, Inspector of Poor, and Sophia McKid, and had issue James Alexander, born 29th Dec. 1864.

NOTE 4: George Murray (Ann McGregor’s husband) writes to Ann from Columbo 19th May 1858…

".............I wrote a few lines to Roderick I said I would be glad to see him I met a friend of his yesterday he tells me Roderick is coming down to see me also that he was going to Australia before he went home in search of Lewis................................. I had no letter from your father regarding Thomas yet, I do not think I will be justified in lending Thomas £500 without I had good security for the same such as a mortgage on the Distillery he should apply to Roderick, his friend I meet tells me he has four thousand pounds in clear cash"

NOTE 5: From William’s letter to Lady Seaforth 28 Oct 1841 re his son ‘Lewis’

“Dear Madam we consider ourselves under great obligation to you as we should always do; more especially for the Kind manner in which you wrote us regarding our Son, we are quite vexed for his seperating himself from the Means of grace which is most dangerous for any young Person in a place where he has none now to advice him; his Mother does not recollect if she said any thing to him regarding Episcopalian Church or not, but I know at the time Lewis went off, that there was terrible noise in the Country regarding that trifling Minister Mr Oldfield who came to the new Chapel at Stornoway, indeed he did not add much to the interest of the Chapel at its first commencement, and at that time we had one of our Daughters, who was going often to hear Mr Oldfield and her Mother was very severe upon her, in Lewis’ presence, and I think that Mr McLeod Uig and Mr MacRae the late Minister of Ness were speaking to him regarding the Episcopalians. I suppose all those things had some effect on his mind, his Mother wrote to him immediately on receipt of your Kind Letter cautioning him on the danger of his conduct in that case, and I trust if he is leaving & receive his Mother’s Letter, that it will have the desired effect.”

NOTE 6: Mike Macdonald Secretary of Fortrose Golf Club advised the following in July 2008 regarding William Watt Gillanders Club Captain in 1937 to 1939….

W W Gillanders was elected as the Gents Club Captain on Tuesday, 20th May 1937 at a Special General Meeting.

It was as part of his captaincy that the Club went forward to purchase a piece of land to the west side of the road to Chanonry Point (about 5 acres). The Club also went on to employ a lady member at a cost of 30 shillings per week to collect green fees from visitors to the course, the sale of golf balls, providing teas and light refreshments. The Club also went on to purchase two tables and twelve chairs at a cost of £22' and 4 farthings.

During the month of October the income from 1937 were read out and were as follows:-

Members Income £83

Visitor Fees - £380

Tea Room - £5

Sale of Golf Balls - £8

It was considered a very satisfactory income from that time.

The Club also went onto agree to purchase the golf magazine 'Golf Illustrated' for six months for the members enjoyment. It was also passed at the Club Council at that time that any cheques being signed for over £10 must require two signatures instead of one signature.

Significantly, it was during W W Gillanders' Captaincy that a motion was carried to accept that James Braid should be employed to lay out the newly purchased field and the Secretary was instructed to write to him at once to find out when he could come to do so (19th September 1938). At a meeting on 12th October 1938, Mr James Braid explained to each member present his new plan of the golf course. Previous to the meeting Mr Braid had gone over the course with the Secretary and two greenkeepers. The members present at the meeting were unanimous in their approval of the suggestions. On receipt of the plan, the Club agreed to employ two extra men to the end of the year and to get at least two new greens ready for the next year together with the necessary tees. It was also agreed to get 'Golf Magazine' half yearly for the members enjoyment.

The Club also declined to buy a tractor on 26th January 1939 because the running costs would be over £100 per year. The Greenkeepers wage was increased by half a crown weekly as from the 1st April in appreciation of the good work he did in carrying out the James Braid Plan. The AGM that year also motioned towards the erection of a new clubhouse by setting aside a sum of money for that purpose.

NOTE 8: Letter by Capt. George Murray to his wife Ann regarding the death of George McGregor son of William

25.1.1860 Buenos Aires -

“I am extremley sorry for the melancholy fate of poor George cut off in the prime of life, poor fellow he was the best friend you had in your family and loved you better than all the rest put together ...............am loading for London direct and will leave here in course of the latter end of next month and you may look out for me in London about the beginning of May or the latter end of April, if I am spared”

From this it can be determined, allowing for time of recipt of advice by George Murray and response, that George McGregor died circa 1859.

NOTE 9: Scots in Latin America. (book)

GILLANDERS, THOMAS, born 1802, second son of George Gillanders in Lewis, died in Buenos Ayres in December 1831. [AJ#4411].

[RR: It is strongly believed that the father is our George as George Gillanders I of Highfield had already died in 1801 and was also already residing at Highfield since circa 1781. Also, all the Stewart women have a son named Thomas who is believed to be the name of their grandfather].

NOTE 20: 42nd Battalion Australian Infantry Forces (AIF) WWI (John MacRae MacGregor ) K.I.A.

In 1917, the operations of the 3rd Division were focussed on the Ypres sector of Belgium. The 42nd participated in major battles at Messines on 7 June, Warneton on 31 July, Broodseinde on 4 October, and Passchendaele on 12 October. Even though the battalion was in a reserve role, the battle of Passchendaele proved particularly costly. It lost over a third of its strength, principally from German gas attacks, and trench foot caused by the sodden condition of the battlefield.
