Range Safety - Making sure that ALL athletes are being safe on the range at all times.

Puller and Scorers:
Difficulty Level 2
Adults needed 4-5
At first glance, this position seems complicated; however, after pulling and scoring two
rounds of 25 traps, volunteers usually find themselves feeling comfortable.
Puller/Scorers sit one person per trap stand and pull traps using a trap machine release.
The release is an electronic trigger that throws a target when the button is pressed.
The puller presses the button when the athlete gives the command “pull.”
Scoring: The target is determined as a hit or a miss and recorded on the score sheet by
placing either a slanted line for a hit or broken target. or a circle for a missed or lost target.
Any target that is chipped is considered a broken target. In the case of a dispute
between the athlete and the scorer, the target in question must be verified as hit or
miss by other athletes on the range, otherwise the scorer’s decision is final.
The puller should call all missed targets by saying “loss” after each missed shot.
The puller does not need to call broken or hit targets.
In the case of a target flying broken out of the trap house, the puller/scorer should
call “no bird.” In this instance, the athlete receives another target.
After each athlete has shot five times at their station, the puller gives the command
“dead and move.” At this time, the athletes all move to the station to their immediate
right. The athlete standing on station number five should move behind the other
athletes and assume his/her position on station one.
Puller/ scores should watch to see that chambers are open and the all barrels (with
the exception of break open) are in the upwards position.
Remind athletes to pick up their empty hulls when they complete their round.
Keep track of how many rounds are shot, as the house needs to be loaded after every
three rounds.
Reminder: It is the Squad Leader’s (station #1) responsibility to begin the round not
the Puller/Scorer’s determination. The Squad Leader should begin by checking with
their teammates on the line and they should use the following commands. “Squad
Ready”, “Puller Ready”, “Can we see a bird” at that point the puller should throw a
“Free” target for all athletes to see. Then, the round will begin with the athlete in the
first position command, “Pull.
Range Safety Adults:
Difficulty Level 2
Adults needed 1 - 2
This may appear to be an easy job but it is perhaps the most important.
Each practice, volunteers ensure correct fire safety at the gun range.
Range Safety Adult should wear a Orange Vest obtained from the head coach’s truck.
Safety volunteers should be looking for three things:
1. Safe muzzle control – barrel should be up when moving about the range.
2. All Chambers should be visible and open when moving about the range and from station
to station.
3. Fingers should not be on triggers.
4. Athletes may load a shell immediately after they shoot their target, BUT THEY MAY NOT
CLOSE THEIR CHAMBER OR BREAK ACTION UNTIL IT IS THEIR TURN TO SHOOT.
5. Range Safety Adults should position themselves to observe one specific Trap House.
6. On warmer days, watch for athletes that are wearing open toed footwear – If a athlete
wears open toed footwear, they are not allowed to shoot.
Range safety adults should notify the head coach or an assistant coach immediately
regarding any issues that arise during the practice.
Check-In / Squading Station Adults:
Difficulty Level 2
Adults needed 1-2
Volunteers assist with the check in of athletes at each practice. They obtain the round sign
up sheets form the head coach’s truck. They remind athletes to attend their wall chart
sessions.
Check-In Station Adults assist with determining the athlete’s level: Beginning, Intermediate
or Advanced. Each level has its assigned Trap Houses. Athletes are not allowed to change
houses. The attendance sheet indicates each athlete’s level. Levels are adjusted weekly
based upon past week’s scores.
Make sure that athletes do not sign up for back-to-back rounds.
Make sure that score sheets are dated and numbered in consecutively by level.
Other ways to help: - Collect fees as needed. Sharpen pencils used for recording scores.
Distribute ear protection. Provide directions to the gun club for lost parents/athletes. Be
the eyes and ears for the head coach while he is working with athletes.
Trap House Loaders:
Difficulty Level 2
Needed 1-2
Each loaded Trap House can service approximately three rounds of 50 trap. As a
machine/house nears empty, Trap House Loaders are needed to go into the house and load
the machine while the next round is being shot.
1. Approach the house only when asked by a coach to do so and only when the athletes are
unloaded and the trap house is safe.
2. Reach around to the inside of the house and turn the machine off – The machine will
throw a target when it is turn to the off position. Therefore, it is VERY important not to
expose yourself to the front of the house while the machine is on.
3. Enter the house, move behind the machine and turn the machine back to the on position.
4. Get a feel for how and when the machine moves.
5 Targets may be placed into the machine in stacks. Be careful to set the targets gently as
dropping them will cause them to crack resulting in a broken target when it is thrown.
6. STAY IN THE HOUSE UNTIL A COACH COMES TO GET YOU OUT.
7. Turn the machine to the off position (a target will be thrown), exit the house, move to the
side of the house and then turn the machine back to the on position.
Wall Chart Instructors:
Difficulty Level 2
Adults needed 1
This job can really get our practice and our kids off to a good start. The Wall Chart is the
athlete’s most overlooked and underused tool, yet it provides perhaps the fastest path to
success without firing a shot. Wall Chart Instructors help students with:
1. Make sure the athlete knows what their lesson is for the day. (The coach will have
assigned a daily lesson for each level.)
2. Help with proper stance/footwork.
3. Make certain that the shoulder mount and the head set are completed in two separate
moves.
4. Make certain the athlete swings smoothly to the target.
5. Make sure all athletes have snap caps before stepping to the line.
Club Opener Volunteers -
Difficulty Level 1
Adults needed - 1
Help to open the club on each practice day.
1. Open Houses.
2. Checks houses are filled and/or loads traps.
3. Plugs in and extends Trap Trigger cords to each trap house stand.
4. Distributes shell buckets to each trap house.
Target Unloaders
Difficulty Level 4
Adults & Athletes needed - No limit.
Physical lifting is involved in this job. Twice per year, volunteers unload and stack heavy
boxes of traps that arrive on pallets via a semi truck.
Time commitment (3 – 5 hours) varies on the number of participating volunteers.
Gloves and long pants are suggested.
