Social Media Policy
The Hopkins High School Trap Team recognizes and supports its student athletes and coaches rights to freedom of speech, expression and association, including the use of social networks. In this context, each student athlete and coach must remember that participating and competing for the team is a privilege not a right. The student athlete or coach represents Hopkins High School Trap and in doing so represents the Hopkins Schools, therefore they are expected to portray themselves, their team and their school in a positive manner at all times. Any online posting must be consistent with Federal, State and Local laws as well as team and school district.
All team members are expected to use discretion when using/posting ANY social media as it pertains to our team. Any derogatory statements posted on social media sites regarding a team member, coach, volunteers, school or other teams etc, will be grounds for removal from the team.
We will follow Hopkins Public Schools district policy #500 with regards to any such matters.
1. Keep in Mind that any social media post dealing with firearms in our current politically charged climate brings with it avoidable scrutiny.
2. Keep in Mind that when you post to any social media platform, especially pictures, those pictures can be manipulated by others who may have bad intentions. In some cases there is no connection between the original poster and those that seek to do harm. Bad actors as we will call them simply like to do bad things to good people.
3. Keep in Mind that as a team we are not here to debate gun rights or freedom of speech concerns. We are not here to be a gun lobby. We are here to compete as a team, to support each other as teammates and while doing so be sensitive and develop empathy to the views of others.
4. Keep in Mind that you represent yourself, your family, your school and your team when you make a post. Although at times we may say we don't care what other people may think, I would say the opposite - it is important that you do care, and that you think before posting anything.
5. Keep in Mind that being a part of this team can expose you to others who have apposing firearm ownership viewpoints. (If as an athlete on our team you ever feel threatened or bullied regarding your participation in out sport you should contact the following immediately. Parents or Guardians/Trap Team Head Coach, School Administrator/Hopkins Athletic Director.
Any athlete in our program that posts onto a social media platform, pictures, likenesses or expressions that contain firearms or any perceived threat to the school, community or to others will be met with severe consequences.
Consequences include but are not limited to:
a. Ban from HHS Trap Team for the remainder of the time in the Hopkins Schools
b. Suspension from school
c. Removal from the school district
d. Loss of graduation privileges
