I graduated from the History and Archaeology Department of the University of Athens in 1972. I continued my studies in History at Birkbeck College and King's College, University of London, where I obtained my PhD in 1988.
Between 1975 and 1979 I worked as a research associate at the Modern Greek History Research Centre of the Academy of Athens, then headed by Eleftherios Prevelakis. In 1981, I was elected permanent researcher at the Centre, where I became Director in September 2006, a position I held until my retirement in December 2016. Since July 2017 I am Researcher Emerita at the Centre.
Since 2000 I am a research advisor for the Venizelos Foundation.
