The gesture drawings I did during our lecture - they're all done within about 1 min and 30 seconds each. It's all about finding the "base line" or the action line to determine the over all general pose of the character.
Some more pose drawings I did after class where I try to find a rough idea for my character - size, shape, age etc.
I wanted to do more pose drawings as warm-up for sketching and I was "in the groove" after class.
The first three (top) sketches is basically me trying to figure out how muscular/fit I wanted her to be. Should she be fit and hourglass-y looking? Or do I want her to be more muscular and bigger than average?
To get a sense of what style for the character I wanted, I did some different shaped pose sketches along with a different age to see what that would be like. I tend to often get an idea straight away and I don't usually need to do a lot of sketching until I get what I want down on paper. But I did some different body shapes just to have some more ideas to choose from when it comes to body type as martial artists tend to be muscular but also skinny due to the high intensity of their training.
With the little research I did on Cobra Kai, I found that most of the pictures were of white characters in the show, but I do acknowledge that there is some diversity. Throughout season 1 there is a heavy focus on Aisha and building her up, but I feel like that fell apart in Season 2 and I hear she's not even a part of season 3.
So because of awareness and my own tendencies to create mostly white characters - I felt like I had to include a person of colour, and I wanted her to be on the spectrum of that character not considering themselves "male or female" but rather both as she's born female, but is more gender fluid as she grows up.
She has a very "head-on" attitude where she will often tackle issues by herself, and even other's.
I used the Ruler (Ctrl + R) in Clip Studio to determine the middle point of the character (in the turnaround image below), and made a rough sketch on top of a turnaround image that I found on Google. I only drew half (left side) of my character so that I could then use the Transform Tool to mirror the left side so it would be as symmetrical as possible.
After I did the rough sketch, I did another one - but with her Cobra Kai outfit on. I only did the left side again, so I could mirror it for the right side, then add the non-symmetrical parts to the character later on (belt knot, and some of the outfit)
For the side view one, I added basically as many ruler grids as possible to see where certain things end/start and where things should line up. I am sure this won't make the model 100% symmetrical but it should at least make the side view as close to the front view as possible.
Finished front and side view, I will delete the sketch layers so that it will look much cleaner when I import it into MAYA.
