Bullying
A set of short stories combined into a longer (but short) animation where different kinds of bullying is shown.
The animation I will be making (roughly 1 minute to 1 minute 30 seconds long) will be a set of something similar to short stories, but they're all connected together. I am aiming to showcase different ways that people are bullying but keeping the flow consistent rather than cutting between each "scenario" and make them truly short stories.
A lot of bullying, or harassment either go unnoticed or people witnessing it won't step up to help the victim at the time. This could very well be because of varying reasons but I personally believe they are afraid to be bullied themselves for sticking up for the one bullied.
The animation will be 2D hand drawn digitally, using the 16:9 aspect ratio and running at 24 fps.
The colour scheme will be a set of blue colours as I feel it will suit the importance and serious and depressive tone I want in the animation the most. Other alternatives I can considered was contrast colours - where I could use bright and cheerful colours for the scenes with a happier tone to it and swap to a more depressive cold scaled colour scheme for the sad, serious scenes showcasing the bullying and its aftermath. Another method would be to use a set of couple colours that would set the tone for the animation/story from start to finish - or maybe experiment with a greyscale colour scheme.
As for the sound in the animation, there will be no voice overs or music for most of it as I want the viewers to focus on what is happening and hopefully using maybe some mumbling, or laughing tracks to put emphasis on the action in the current scene rather than have too much noise and end up with a disconnect between the story and the sounds.
Experimenting with the colour scheme and how she would look in blue tones.
The main character should be relatable and just a "normal" person dealing with the effects of bullying so everyone can hopefully feel like "I know what this feels like". I chose to have a coloured person for this as more often than not, white people are more represented in these situations and especially more likely to be in awareness adverts on television and online. However, just to be clear, I will not be tackling racism in this animation as I feel like it is too heavy to bring into the animation when it is mainly about other kinds of bullying.
Bullies usually don't become one just because they want to, but rather because they are dealing with their own issues. This could be things like; family issues, abuse, new to town and no friends, low self esteem and many many other things.
Since the bully is not perfect themselves, they use various methods to bring others down below their "level" so they can seem superior around them.
Cyber bullying - Emma posts a "selfie" (a picture of herself) on Facebook and gets a lot of mean comments about her appearance from the bully and her "friends".
Physical - The bully pushes Emma around, locking her inside the bathroom stalls, trips her when she walks by.
Verbal - The bully harasses Emma verbally, which means calling her names, make untrue statements about her, or spreading rumours that aren't true.
Sexual abuse - The bully comments on Emma's physical appearance, not being "woman enough", hair style, clothing. Boys making vulgar statements or gestures, and touching her uninvited.
This is a shot where the main character is looking up at the bully. The reason for this angle is to show that the bully is the one in power - the main character (Emmma) feels weaker and smaller due to the effects of the harassment she's undergoing. Emma sees the bully as a monster.
One way to portray social anxiety is by blocking out faces of the crowd - from experience I will always look towards the ground when I walk and would rather not look at anyone's faces or even acknowledge them, hence I would "tune" the crowds out.
