Our survey data gave us an important look at the socioeconomic makeup of our chosen population. Data shows that the majority of respondents were in the age range of 20-30 years old, with a near even split (52-47%) of males to females, respectively. Only a total of about 20% were non-white ethnicities who have mostly achieved graduating college (both undergraduate and graduate levels). Most people are aware of environmental issues such as solid waste, water, and air pollution, but nearly half are not currently engaging in steps to help the issues at hand. I think we were mostly surprised by this finding because it seems people are aware of the need to improve the environment, but are not making efforts, or may be unaware of the options they have available. About 46% of this population also identify themselves as being the responsible parties for taking steps to improving their environmental impact, and many do participate in recycling, mostly done at home or work. We think that one of the strangest outcomes was that the data showed that a few less people responded as being likely to use a reusable product if they were given it, as opposed to purchasing one. This may lead us to believe that people are simply used to buying their products they deem suitable and that there currently are few programs that add incentive, such as receiving more sustainable products as rewards. Basically all users (98%) own smartphones and use them and apps on a daily basis, although largely for social media.
Overall, it seems that most people are definitely aware of the environmental state but are generally not sure of the severity. Nearly everyone has a smartphone and use them daily for tasks when they need help or to reference specific instructions. Data suggests that users would be inclined to make more environmentally conscious choices if they were given the opportunity to do so, but availability and access to products that can help lower environmental pollution may influence their decisions to obtain them. Given that most of our respondents are college-aged with about â…“ being in the 25-50K income range leads us to believe that the best market is going to involve individuals who maybe range into the 30+ age category and do majority of the shopping. It appeared that the desire to make improvements was present in this demographic, but we will make considerations on refining our target audience based on potential levels of regular shopping trips and how to supplement their shopping experiences with our app.
