Dendrochronology is the process of determining the age of geologic, climatological, or geomorphic events, as well as determining the type of event that occurred, by studying changes in the pattern of tree rings. To view the rings of a tree without harming it, a core, which is a thin cross-section of the tree, is taken. This can be done by using a tool called an increment borer, which is screwed into the tree and separates the core sample before it is extracted through the hole in the device. By examining the rings on the core, the age of the tree can be determined by counting the rings, one for each year, and by studying the change in width of each ring, we can infer as to what the climate may have been in that specific year.

Dendrochronological and geomorphic evidence found the Little Ice Age, which occurred from the 13th to the 19th century, to be a particularly active time in this region in terms of geomorphic activity (Motyka, 2003). Another study conducted in Poland used dendrochronological and geomorphic evidence to reveal ground instability, which the study hypothesizes to be related to piping (Migón et al, 2014). The observations made in this study allow geomorphologists to better predict where and when landslides are more likely to occur.
