Stephen Lawrence was an 18 years old, Black, British teenager from Plumstead and when he was murdered in a racially motivated attack while he waited for a bus on the evening of April 22nd 1993. His death sparked outrage after investigations into his death was believed to be tampered with after Met police declared the investigation as “inactive” despite having received a letter giving the names of the suspects just one day after the murder.
The next decade proved to be distressing for the Lawrence's as they expressed many frustrations with not only the police but also the media for covering up the true intentions of Stephen’s murderers. Charges were continuously dropped; inquests were halted and the CPS refused to prosecute the suspects as there was “insufficient evidence to bring charges”. By December of 1994, The Lawrence's launched their own private investigation and captured covert video evidence with Stephen’s killers using strong racist and violent language. From April 1996 to March 1998, Stephen’s killers remained acquitted and without prosecution. Until January 2012, receiving a minimum of 15 years and 2 months
In 2018, on the 25th anniversary of Stephen’s death, Doreen Lawrence (Stephen’s mother) announced Stephen Lawrence day. A day where communities get the chance to be a part of the national conversation and make small changes to support the tackle for institutional racism.
