COVID-19 came crashing down on us towards the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020 and with this crash there have been many variants, restrictions, tiers and lockdowns; in some cases, restrictions have been broken by the unexpected and the legitimacy of governments have been questioned.
Bringing it back to March 23rd 2020, where PM Boris Johnson announced the UK would enter its first National Lockdown and measures would legally come into force. The government set out five tests that he was expecting the country to meet, before lockdown was eased. On the 10th May 2020, conditional plans for lifting lockdown were announced and by summer of 2020 Lockdown restrictions eased further, including the reopening of indoor theatres, bowling alleys and soft play. However, contrary to what people thought, the lockdown would be back sooner than most people thought.
On the 14th October 2020, the UK went into tier three and this was followed by a second national lockdown on the 5th November 2020, but the wonders don’t stop there as tier 4 and tougher restrictions were announced on 19th December 2020 which resulted in Christmas zoom parties and families not being able to see each other. By the 6th January 2021, England entered their third and final lockdown and in March 2021, schools in England were reopened and many people were encouraged to work from home.
Fast forward to present day, Johnson has been extremely reluctant to put the country in a lockdown due to economic reasons and the backing of scientific evidence that shows restrictions have been put in place and precautions being taken by the country will be alright so, as a result mask wearing has become compulsory on TFL services and in public areas such as, restaurants, schools, and shops.
Now that we’ve been made aware of the flow of lockdown and the restrictions put in place, we as a nation have come to find out that the government in power who set the rules that we have been trying to follow, have been breaking them from the very start.
With the first party being on 20th May 2020, then on the eve of prince Phillip’s funeral on 16th April 2021, then again in December 2021. The electorate are out raged at the occurrences of these parties because whilst people we’re dying of Covid and had sick relatives they couldn’t see, the Conservatives were having boozy parties and drinking lives away.
As a result of the exposure of these parties there have been speculations over Johnson’s ability to lead the country as he been constantly questioned about the No10 Downing street parties and his lack of consideration for the public.
After a long time of accusations and allegations on the 12th January 2022 at the PMQ’s Johnson has finally admitted to attending the lockdown parties and has apologised for his unacceptable behaviour. During the PMQs Johnson stated that he thought the Christmas party was a “work event” and in his apology he said that if he could, he would’ve found another way to celebrate as one of the parties was to celebrate his birthday in June 2020.
However, if no one found out about the ongoing parties, it’s safe to say that Johnson and the rest of the Conversative party would have kept it a secret from the rest of the country which shows high levels of distrust and could be the reason why Starmer, alongside other MP’s and members of the public, have stated that Johnson should resign from being Prime Minister as he is no longer seen as trustworthy which is shown through his inability to follow his own rules and restrictions.
As evidence piles up and an investigation by the British police is being done, we are yet to find out what the future of MP Boris Johnson looks like.
Will there be a voter no confidence or will Johnson’s premiership be saved?
