People around the world have lost their mind over the new Korean psychological thriller Squid Game, a show which follows a group of over 400 people who are desperate for money and taking part in many risks in order to create better lives for themselves. It came out less than a month ago on the popular streaming service Netflix, which has over 200 million subscribers. The show quickly rose to popularity after many people took to apps such as Twitter and Tiktok to express their interest in the show.
As shows such as Spanish speaking Money Heist, Elite and Korean film Parasite become more popular, we could begin to see a shift in society as more people begin to take an interest in and watch foreign language shows. The examples mentioned have encouraged viewers to watch other shows that are spoken in different languages whilst having subtitles to accompany them. This could result in Netflix releasing more foreign language films from a range of other countries in attempt to cater to larger audiences.
The series also highlights real life issues of debt in South Korea. This issue has affected South Koreans as there has been a rise in youth unemployment. Characters represent south Korea’s disadvantaged minorities and highlights the exploitation of the poor by the rich and the constant debts families must pay for housing, education and just to get by in their day to day lives.
There are many speculations that a second season of Squid Game will be released. Netflix has not made any promises, however if another season is to come, it is likely we will have a long wait until 2023.
