Disney have been on a roll remaking some of their classics such as, The Lion King, Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. By doing this, their main goal has been to diversify their products so more people can be represented. However, there has been some backlash because as they have increased the people of colour in their films, one of the actors that are meant to be casted said Disney is “progressive in one way” but they’re “still making that backward story of seven dwarves living in the cave.”
Personally, I believe that that Disney has done a great job at diversifying their films because over the past couple of years we’ve seen the release of films like Black Panther, Encanto and Coco which all include underrepresented ethnic groups but there is still an undeniable issue with the representation of people with disabilities.
The remaking of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs is a perfect example of this because whilst Disney’s casting involves the casting of a Latina actress Rachel Zegler there is a lot of recoil simply because they are still telling a story on seven dwarfs who live in a cage which makes no sense because this can be looked at as belittling dwarfism as, the actor casted for Snow White could’ve been the one to have dwarfism as that has a much more positive connotation.
Although Disney are trying to recreate this story by keeping the remake’s storyline as close to the original as possible, the need for casting all seven dwarfs as people with dwarfism contrary to popular beliefs, isn’t a good way of positively diversifying the company which leads to my question:
Who is Disney doing this for? If it’s not to increase diversification and raise awareness, what is the purpose?
